The following paragraph was the most interesting to me: "Under terms of his new deal, obtained by The Southern Illinoisan, Mullins and athletic director Jerry Kill would be required to meet and discuss an extension of one or more years after his second season if he has "comprehensive evaluations which show positive results of his yearly goals and objectives (as set forth by director)." Any extension would have to be approved by the SIU Board of Trustees."
Great incentive to get the program turned around quickly. Not the 4-5 years that BBQbarry said it would take. I think my man crush has grown to not only include Kill, but also Mullins.
There was a really wise guy here that implied that having goals and objectives for a coach with annual reviews was the way to avoid a PT and CLO in future. It's good to see the AD adopting that advice that the rest of the planet figured out years ago.
What I was getting at is not that there are going to be yearly reviews. Of course there should be. Not for all, but for new hires and first time coaches yes. I'm sure Nick Saban, et al, don't have to sit for yearly reviews. I liked the fact that extensions will be available after the first couple of years. With a five year contract, most new hires who are first time head coaches don't talk about extensions for at least the first four years. Just another carrot that I thought Kill did a good job throwing in.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
Article in The Southern on Brendan Mullins:
I actually agree with Heff's premise, but I'm not sure how you write this without addressing the elephant in the room that Smithpeters was a candidate to be part of Mullins' staff. Or at least try to get comments from Smithpeters for the article.

the "story" ends abruptly and states nothing new. who are we actively recruiting now? we know who we have signed.
i personally dont care about this issue anyway. its an oversimplification. bbq could have had the best relationship with that coach. we are recruiting players not coaches.
i know you want a good relationship with the coach but the player is who matters at the end of the day.
we have historically done fine without their players. i am not concerned. write a real story
Craving a McBride Special!
Amazing that story comes out now instead of , you know, the last 7 years
If we can’t recruit kids from Logan because KS didn’t get the job, so what. It’s one school. Would it be nice ? Of course, but it’s certainly not an issue one way or the other.

yeah, i could care less. we are now recruiting coast 2 coast.
i guess i am old school but i dont want to have to rely on a steady stream of juco players. it's no way to build for long term success.
i know things have changed but i want the best player available and not some random player just to keep alive some pipeline to a local juco.
and like someone else pointed out - we have won a lot of Valley championships without a single JALC player on the roster. we will survive
Logan has had multiple players who were literally too talented to go to SIU. They will get players from Logan if they really want them.
Hell, even with Hinson and Smithpeters riff or whatever, SIU players were still scrimmaging and stuff at Logan versus Logan with Smithpeters there.
I know Pippen, Lloyd and others were there last year, and I was only on that campus once. Saw both of them getting ready to work out and play ball.
I think with Hinson, it was really dissappointing to not get any Logan players since Hinson went the JUCO route so much. With Mullins, it’s pretty clear he’s going to go many different routes to get the players he wants so I’m not too worried at all. I also highly doubt Smithpeters is going to steer a kid away from Mullins and SIU.

When SIU starts winning games, MVC championships and NCAA games as I fully expect them to in the near future, this will not be an issue at all, if it is now or not. "If you build it (a winning program), they will come !!!!!!!"
