@salukiworld Completely agree that they need to get guards who can average in low double figures. Isaiah Swope 15.6, Landon Moore 13.1. The other guards we have shown interest in with higher ppg averages are D2, D3: Malik Tidwell 20.8; Raheem Anthony 24.4. Whether that translates to D1 is questionable, given the past history.

Any rumblings on new Assistant Coach? Have to believe that is top priority right now. Ideally a new recruit wants to know who the staff will be before they commit.

Old guy here. Been a Saluki diehard since '65. I would call 22-23 a good season. About as close to a conference championship as it gets. It seemed to me the offense was quite successful in getting what it was designed to do,i.e. open 3 point shots. Lordy, but this team missed a ton of wide open 3 pointers.

I agree with the opinions above that recruiting has been poor----considerably weaker than Hinson's. But excellent as far as the "culture" goes.

the recruiting is absolutely, without question, unequivocally, better than it was under Hinson.

Can you tell me why you think this?  Believe me I am in no way a Hinson fan and was ready for a change. But the Facts say otherwise. Hinson had 6 different players that made either 1st 2nd or 3rd all Valley team. Yes I am including Lance Jones with that he was a Hinson recruit. Bryan has had 1 player that he has coached and signed that has made all Valley.  I am not including other awards given by the Valley but If I did it would again favor Hinson.   I really want Bryan to succeed but for that to happen HE has to up his recruiting. I know we all may love our Salukis but obviously Valley coaches and media aren't as enamored with our recruiting.

Hornecker and Kennard Davis are their #3 and #4 recruits in program history since 247 started grading prospects.  They get credit for Domask too even though it was a flip.

Personally, I put much more stock in a measurement like all-conference placements once in a Saluki uniform than some service's recruiting rankings, which often are wildly off the mark.

That said, Hinson's top two players were Desmar Jackson (inherited from Lowery) and Anthony Beane (hired his dad), and beyond that, I don't think he had any first-teamers, or max one or two, in his seven years. He was an OK recruiter but not close to good enough to get Southern over the hump. So far, that has also been the case with Mullins ... hopefully that changes and/or they are able to start developing some of the promising young players that have been signed.

I think development has been a bigger problem than anything.  Domask has been the only recruit that’s really been developed here by the staff and Domask was good from his first game.  Jones’ development was great too but him taking a step back in his last season loses a lot of credibility there.  The entire 2020 class of Banks, Filewich, and Eric Butler is gone now.

Just to clarify I am not a Hinson fan, and all I am saying is that Bryan HAS to step up recruiting and fast or our program isn't going anywhere. I really don't think it matters about how many Stars are behind a kids name, the question is can the kid play at our level or not. Lowery brought in the highest rated class in school history and we ALL KNOW how that ended. I just wanted to point out that Bryan's recruiting has a long way to go. I really think Bryan's has done a good job coaching he just needs better players or as Salukiworld said developing the players he has brought in.

Barbecue recruits of note:

Mamadou Seck (MVC Hon. Mention), Dantiel Daniels (MVC All-Freshman, asst coach at UTM), Desmar Jackson (MVC 2nd team), Sean O'brien (2nd team MVC), Anthony Beane (1st team MVC), Jordan Caroline (left and was all con Mountain West), Armon Fletcher (2nd team MVC, NBA G League), Sean Lloyd (MVC All-Defense), Kavion Pippen(MVC 3rd team, NBA G league)

I realize this was over twice as many years as BM, but to say BM has out- recruited Barbecue is very questionable at this point. Hopefully the next couple of years will prove otherwise.

Seck, Jackson and Daniels were all Lowery recruits. Daniels didn't even play for BBQ so that's a ridiculous name to include. I guess you could say Seck was re-recruited by the staff. Jackson sat out Lowery's last year and stayed so if you want to say he was re-recruited, okay. Beane was only here b/c of his Dad so not like you won a recruiting battle there. Caroline was a big get, but they couldn't hold on to him so all conference on another team doesn't really mean much.

I don't know that Mullins is hitting out of the park, but he has had some pretty high profile recruits come here and two really big ones stay for four years. You can argue that development has been an issue and I'd have no problem with that statement at least for some of these guys, but I think the talent brought in has been better than BBQ.

Also from watch stadium.com.

Mullins’ assistant coach salary pool is $360,000 annually for three assistant coaches.

Mullins’ contract can’t be terminated until after March 31, 2021.

If Mullins’ contract is terminated, he’ll receive $225,000 in severance, which is the equivalent of 22 weeks of salary, benefits and perks owed to him under the terms of the contract, as well as liquidated damages in the amount listed below:

  • $425,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2021 but before April 1, 2022.
  • $275,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2022 but before April 1, 2023.
  • $25,000 – If Mullins is fired after March 31, 2023 but before the end of the contract.

If Mullins terminates his contract early, he’ll owe the university $125,000 for each year, or partial year, remaining in his contract.

SIU has paid Mullins $2 million, or close to it.

After this next season, it will be $2.5 million, plus a $250,000 buyout.

Mullins will leave the university with about $3 million.

Great gig if you can get it.

I fear that Mullins is gonna try to bring in 6 average Seniors or Graduate Seniors in the portal to try and quickly fix this mess.  That would put SIU in the same spot as Hinson left it if it doesn’t work out.

Mullins did not recruit Lance Jones - Hinson did.

Daniels played in 2011 (Lowery) and 2012, Hinson's first year. Guess he was a Lowery recruit. I remember Hinson trying very hard to keep him after his sophomore year, but one year of Barbeque sauce was enough for DD I guess. Went to Colorado State. DD was our 3rd leading scorer under Hinson, behind Desmar Jackson and Jeff Early. Good rebounder for his size but nearly as good as Jeff Early.

Think Hinson recruited Gene Teague, who turned out to be a good player for Seton Hall.

Hinson had too many recruits who were D2 talent, but the good players he recruited or kept were really good... he also recruited Lance Jones.

Mullins has not recruited better than Barbeque at this point IMO.
