Ouch
Derrik Smits is transferring from Valparaiso University as a post grad w/ one year of eligibility remaining.
The 7’1" center (12.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 59.4 FG%) also plans to enter the NBA Draft process.

I think we have a spot open for him.
decent player - not as good as Pippen - don't see an NBA future for him unless 7'1" signals backup
Not good for Valpo. Smits was a decent player, but not a huge difference maker. As for the NBA.....I can't see that happening for him.
Ouch for Valpo-yes.
But he and his dad have visions of the NBA and are looking to move to a P5 team if possible. Smits is not a high major player unless he improves dramatically. If he were, he should have dominated the Valley and carried Valpo in his back in the process. Neither happened.

These are the 2018-19 numbers. I am not as certain as you are that Pippen is a better player than Smits.
I would rate Pippen and his two years at SIU as a disappointment. You can argue as to the reason(s) for Pippen's lack of progress as a Saluki--coaching, player, player stamina...
Don't get me wrong. Pippen was a good player for SIU. I just thought he could have been better.

Drake is playing in the CIT at Southern Utah. I'm glad they are getting to play, but it should be in the NIT.

I was pleasantly surprised by Pippen - he improved a lot this year and showed flashes of some real talent.
In conference games (same opponents):
Pippen 13.9, Smits 12.4 ppg
Pippen 5.6, Smits 5.1 RBs
Pippen 2.3, Smits 0.5 blocks per game (Pippen led the league, Smits was not in the top 10)
Via eye test, it wasn't close IMO. Pippen was a considerably better player, and his shot blocking changed games. Pippen will make some bucks playing overseas if he wants to. Derek can live in his Dad's basement in Zionsville, play video games, and eat Cheetos! LOL

They should be in the NIT for sure. But what does it say about the Valley that the regular season co-champion can't even get an NIT bit? Horrible, horrible year for the MVC.
(Inflammatory political snark)
I guess Dana Ford is doing a good job of recruiting Missouri with 3 kids from the 5A state champ (Columbia RockBridge) and a top local kid from Springfield. MoState is looking better for the future.

I know from research in the past that if your RPI was over 100, there was only a slight chance to get an NIT at large bid. Even though Drake's NET ranking was the best in the Valley (at 127), it's hard to think that they could have gotten into the NIT without winning the Valley regular season championship outright.
Yeah, good point--I typed that without thinking. I guess the real point is that our conference co-champ had a NET that bad; again, what a terrible year for the MVC, and I don't see next year being a whole lot better.

Via (my) eye test, it was close.
Agree to disagree.
In the four games between SIU and Valpo (last two years), SIU and Pippen were victorious in one; Valpo three (and both this year).
I expected, his senior year, for Pippen to (at times) dominate. And to be honest, he kinda did...for very short periods of time. But he could never sustain it.
I guess that's my point--Pippen was a good Saluki. Not a great one...as evidenced by the W-L record vs Valpo...who were/are as messy a squad as Hinson's...the past couple of years.
And I thought Pippen had a chance to be a great Saluki.
