Don't get too excited about Murray's losses just yet. Some programs and coaches know how to recruit. Prohm led the Racers to a 104-29 record from 2012-15. Also, I remember last year when Bradley lost all their players and some were scoffing, until this season when they finished above us in the Valley.
Also, just because their portal players entered, doesn’t mean they will find a good alternative. They could stay.
I don’t want to see SIU become the Arkansas in SEC Football where the league is so strong that you have no chance but I’d rather see the Valley succeed because it benefits nobody when players are getting plucked off like they are. Sure, SIU is closer to the top now depending on how the rest of the portal goes but I’d rather see SIU work their way up internally than watching others get worse.
I may be jinxing the program, but I will be surprised if any player that the coaching staff wants to keep, leaves SIU. The reason is the culture that BM espouses and practices. Recruit players of good character, and foster a family environment.
Hannibal (Murray State) just entered the portal, Transfer U may lose another!

I've always pulled for a strong Valley that has the chance to get at-large bids and give NCAA qualifiers a shot at a decent seed/draw in the NCAAs. I have no interest in a watered-down league that is locked in to one bid as a 14 seed.
That said, there appears to be a major opportunity for SIU for next year if in fact they do retain their core pieces and just about everyone else in the league does not. Here's hoping they can pull in some additional scoring/talent in the next several weeks because if they do, it seems realistic that Southern should be among the top teams in the league, with at least a chance of being on top, pending how portal season unfolds elsewhere around the league.
so much for murry running away with the league next year. all you big racer fans around here got it wrong. barkeep was once again the voice of reason. thanks for supporting that boat anchor boys! welcome Valpo #2. enjoy your cut of OUR MONEY. 💰 💰 💰. but, but morant. bfd!
Murray went 31-3 this year and won an NCAA Tourney game
what is your point with that statement? do you still think they will be a huge favorite to win the league? the money stays with the ohio valley. now we get saddled with a crap team with no players in a complete rebuild. they get a share of mvc cash while looking like valpo. I really don't get the love fest and excuses you guys make for these clowns. valpo was a very successful program and most of you crapped on them endlesslly. let's see if they hit 3-31 when it counts next season. maybe they can partner with valpo to put together a team. again, thanks for continuing to be in love with this boat anchor. you do great work here, but you really missed it on this one. just wait and see.

Murray is having losses right now due to their own success last year. They went 30-3 and won a Tournament game and their coach got plucked. And yeah, 30 wins is inflated because of the OVC but it's still an impressive feat. We'd all take close to that level of success at SIU right now.
Wouldn't consider them the same situation as Valpo. Valpo plays in a high school arena and they've done nothing to upgrade or put money into their program since they joined the Valley and haven't adjusted. Murray went out and got a good coach in Steve Prohm that had success there while Valpo sits with Matt Lottich when Bryce Drew was available after he got fired by Vanderbilt.
Murray is a known commodity among mid-majors because of Ja Morant and they've already been recruiting to a Missouri Valley level, they have an impressive Freshman class still coming in and my guess is they'll reload rather quickly in the portal.
As I say that, 6'10 Murray commit Cornelious Williams just re-opened his recruitment. 3 star from North Carolina

You do realize your anti-Murray sentiment goes against just about everyone from the Valley leadership itself to basketball journalists and everyone in between? Murray was *without a doubt* the best available basketball program outside of Belmont to bring on, and it wasn't even close.
And now you're saying everyone is wrong because key players are leaving? Before the transfer portal, its was pretty typical for players to leave programs when their coaches took jobs elsewhere, and with McMahon leaving that's now in effect. Also, now that the transfer portal is in play, key players are also wanting to see if they can elevate their draft, and potentially, their NIL statuses to bolster their own careers. You also realize that they'll find new players, right? When Ja Morant left for the NBA, did they tank the next few years?
Under your logic, from what I can tell, the only program that would be good enough for your standards - so they don't "bring the conference down" like a boat anchor - would be a program from a higher-level conference. Well, programs in the Big East, ACC, and SEC don't typically downgrade to the Valley, so you're basically stuck with picking from the best programs which have shown the best track record of success from lower-level conferences. And that was Murray and Belmont.
I don't think there's anyone on this site that loves Murray as much as some try to make it seem. You can acknowledge the success of a program without being in love with them. I guarantee you every single person on this site would love to see the Salukis beat the crap out of Murray State

I look forward to a Murray-SIU rivalry and I hope we beat them twice a year. Doesn't change the fact that they were perfect for the Valley. And that opinion was shared before this season when they were coming off a disappointing year. It's pretty obvious the Valley made the right choice after what they did this year.
A few posters on this site need therapy for their outsized disdain for Murray, which clearly has been an outstanding midmajor program for much of the past decade by any reasonable judgment. Yes, they are facing adversity this particular offseason and likely will be relatively down next year, but their program overall is in fine shape and positioned to sustain success in a way that few, if any, other Valley programs can feel confident about.
On top of the good points that have been made re: the misguided Murray/Valpo comparison, I would say this: Murray has fans and Valpo doesn't (or at least not many). That matters in sustaining success.
And so does the Ja Morant factor ... not only will he continue to help them from a recruiting standpoint, but he's going to be filthy rich and clearly loves their program. I would not be surprised to see him make a very large donation at some point.
I recommend people around here enjoy the rivalry and focus on the needed improvements in Southern's program rather than spend so much time trying to denigrate a program that clearly has been competing at a high level in recent times.

I've actually disliked the Racers for years, and will probably dislike them more as they become an MVC rival of Southern's.
Just not willing to completely ignore reality as it pertains to both programs' achievements, or lack thereof, over the past decade-plus.
