This is not a drill!

"Feb 28, 2020 - Trump explicitly said the total number of U.S. coronavirus cases will soon go from 15 to "close to zero."

14 days later...

March 12, 2020 - 1537 confirmed 39 deaths 15 recovered

This is growing exponentially and we have no vaccine and no immunity.

OK The truth is starting to come out.

.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 100,000 people are believed to be infected with the coronavirus, according statements by officials with the Ohio Department of Health during a Thursday afternoon news conference.

That number accounts for around 1% of Ohio’s population.

"We know now, just the fact of community spread says that at least 1%, at the very least 1% of our population is carrying this virus in Ohio today," said Dr. Amy Acton, Director of ODH. "We have 11.7 million people."

Just the facts mam:                                         https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

1323 cases in the US. 30 people have died, vast majority (or all) were elderly, respiratory diseases, or other serious health conditions. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

@dawgbytes

the puts the fatality rate at a little under .04. Not counting unknown cases which is a very large number.  That is actually less than the flu

Fatality rate in Italy is at 6.2%.

If you look at siusalukis.com, baseball and softball have "SUSPENDED" for games through the end of March. Well, I guess that takes away my UofI @ SIU plans for a weekend at the Itch.

Missouri Valley was going to host Thu/Fri games at Enterprise. Bummer for our conference and a bummer for the Lou.

Is the XFL still on, Vince? GOODGAWDALMIGHTY HEMAYBEBROKENSMACKDABINHALF! Go (Battle)Hawks!

Wait, how is that rate less than that of the flu?

When I do the math based on these figures, like you I see around 4 percent for corona.

But using figures for the worst case scenario (most virulent) for the flu from the CDC figures (52,000 deaths in 34 million cases), you get a death rate of 1.53 percent. When you use the best case scenario (least virulent) from the CDC figures (i.e., fewest number of deaths, most number of cases: 20K deaths, 49 million cases), you get a rate of around .04 percent.

So it would appear to be somewhere on a scale of (roughly) 2.5 to 10 times WORSE than the flu in terms of death rate. Again, the worst figures for flu virulence are at roughly 1.5 percent. In Italy, for one example of where figures have been kept for longer and that had a similarly slow response time, the rate is over 6 percent.

Sure, you're still more likely to die of the flu because of the greater rate of infection. But it doesn't mean this should be getting a baffled *shrug* about "hysteria." They're trying to contain this with these draconian measures to prevent possibly millions of deaths. And that is possible if NOTHING is done. Did the NCAA tournament need to get canceled? Classes on uni campuses throughout the country? I don't know. And neither does anyone, definitively. A lot of these actions are based on what has worked elsewhere, notably in Taiwan and Singapore, versus what has NOT worked (waiting until it's too late to prevent a bad outbreak and THEN taking these measures), notably in Italy and Iran.
