I really have not been upset with any of the losses the last 7+ years. The players give all they have, and never quit. In the end talent wins games.
Just have to hope Loyola plays a bad game and SIU a good one on Monday.

They're playing Drake but same thing really. Drake has some injury problems but they're extremely athletic and well-coached. Probably the worst matchup for SIU in the conference.
Last 5 minutes of the first half will be a tough watch for the team on film. Discouraging loss.

Tried of losing. Very disappointed with our talent level. Not sure this experiment is going to work. If Mullins can’t recruit at a higher level this isn’t going to end well.

Excluding the true freshmen I know nothing about, we have two very talented players. Then we have a bunch of guys who will be solid mid-major seniors. Gotta have more talent than that to challenge for MVC Championships.
We're in the situation where we have to either play two near perfect halves or we have to shoot lights out to beat the better teams in the MVC. Tonight we weren't great 1st half. We shot 48.9%, which is excellent but not lights out. The real killer was 62% FTs while they shot 83% and shot 7 more FTs. They outscored us by 9 from FT line.
I agree with Mullins that some of the fouls called on us tonight were just bad calls!

i hear you. we are slow. we are undersized. we don't seem to be making much progress. our offense is a wreck. the defense isn't great. the leading 3 pt shooter in the mvc took only 3 shots. i appreciate how hard these kids work but i am not seeing much light at the end of the tunnel yet. one of our guards had 5 turnovers to 2 assists.
Craving a McBride Special!

Well, it’s SIU. Mullins has the job for as long as he wants it.
But seriously, a person couldn’t ask for a more boring basketball team than this one.
They’re obviously lousy on offense. But the supposed great defense should at least lead to transition baskets, but a no there as well.
I’m more concerned about next season at this point. I will keep beating this drum, I hope he can get a couple good JUCO guys to come in and bring some much-needed excitement immediately.

He also had 4 rbs, 2 stls and 20 pts.
I want to touch on what oberkfell stated earlier, too: I give credit to the kids. These kids seem like genuinely good kids who care about each other. They bust their a$$.
Just hoping they can get a couple more horses to help out.

Yeah there's definitely not an effort problem. Every single game they're fighting hard and pretty much every loss this season could have been a win.
Outside of Domask & Jones, I'm not sure players are being developed well. The entire recruiting class from last year seems to have taken a step back. We're only playing 1 guy from our 2021 recruiting class on a likely .500 Valley team, which isn't great. I'm intrigued by Hornecker but he'll need to develop and build up some muscle before he makes an impact.
Frustrating loss for sure. Verplanken can’t disappear like that in a game. Booby’s mentioned he only took 3 shots…he played 35 minutes. Need more consistency from him game to game. I don’t see him jacking up 15-20 a game, but we need him to look for his shot more.
I feel like Jones has difficulty sometimes in regulating his aggressiveness . That’s where the 5 TOs shows up, and 2 of those came down the stretch when we let the lead slip. Also, 11 threes? When you are shooting 25%, not ideal (although he knocked down 4 for 36% today). Part of the issue is he gets the ball when the shot clock is running down so sometimes his hand is forced a bit, but has to get better with playing under control. Delicate balance for sure
Really not getting much contribution from the 5 spot on offense. Sure hope Scotty is ready next year b/c we need some help.
Need to get these next 2…ideally next 3 to get back in this.
I really like Lance Jones and he gives a lot to this team, but his decision-making HAS to get better within the team game. Too many turnovers, ill-advised shots and out of control drives to the basket. Some of it isn’t his fault because he’s often trying to bail out our stagnant offense, but for this team to get to the next level, he has to improve there.
As others have stated, Verplancken needs more shots. How he is so often the most forgotten man in SIU’s offense is beyond me. Also, I have to wonder why his game is so painfully one dimensional. As a freshman at his D2 school, he could put the ball on the floor and had a nice mid-range game. That needs to show up some or defenses are going to continue crowding and chasing him off his patented corner 3 spot.
The 5 spot … can’t fix what isn’t there. Even if a bit raw, Ebube might’ve had a shot to learn on the job more than anyone might’ve anticipated had he not red-shirted. Too bad.
Athletes. SIU needs an infusion and will need it more next year and beyond. Borrowing from an earlier point; slow and short won’t get it done.
Also, I wonder if I’ll see a fundamentally sound SIU basketball team in my lifetime?
I’m tired. I want SIU to be good again. It’s been a decade and a half. If you want to make yourself cry, go back and watch some of the SIU/UNI game at home from 2007 from the original post in this thread and look at how they guarded a very good UNI team. Athletes..

Sigh
SIU was picked 5th pre season. Lose to 2 teams that were top 4 pre season in very close games.
now the sky is falling ? Got it
