Anyone else surprised SIU leads the MVC in attendance?

The crowds have been bad for some road games, but wow.

It's surprising considering this is the first decent team that's been to Carbondale this year.  Attendance seems down around college basketball probably due to COVID.

Snow, freeze, ice, and climate change were supposed to hit last night. It was White-out night, but some of us white-hairs stayed home with our masks on burning incense.

Is anyone familiar with turf toe?

Is that the type of injury that wouldn’t heal during the season even if Jones sat for a couple weeks?

Turf toe is basically a sprain of the large toe. It can take a long time for turf toe to heal completely, and athletes should expect to take a break from field sports for at least three weeks while the joint capsule heals. Athletes who return too soon or play through pain are often sidelined even longer in the future.

I think we're a quality big away from being a top 50 team; we have the guards, but outside of Filewich and at times Anthony we just don't have a weapon down low that other teams have to respect.

What's odd to me though is that this team has proven it can score in volume and with speed: at the end of the MSU game they rattled off three after three by flying Domask and Verplancken off multiple Reggie Miller-level screens.  Why can we not just start doing that all game?  It seems like our usual offense to post Domask up is good, but often times he can't get a shot off against someone more athletic - Steven is in the same boat.  Why not just have those two guys constantly flying around off screens to get open shots?

Sigh

SIU was picked 5th pre season. Lose to 2 teams that were top 4 pre season in very close games.

now the sky is falling ?    Got it

B***y was criticized endlessly for beating up on bad teams and losing to good teams constantly. This team has 1 quality win all year and 2 horrid losses.

If you're just counting all the top 4 teams as 2 losses, then SIU is staring down a .500 Valley season or worse.

how many wins does it take to avoid Thursday this year? 8 or 9?

Guessing Evansville, Illinois State, and Valpo are locked into Thursday.  Indiana State is over-exceeding expectations but they're probably ticketed for Thursday too.  Bradley and SIU will be battling for 5 and 6 in a weak Valley and get fed to the much better 3 or 4 seed on Friday.

That "we're young" excuse only goes so far. This team  is NOT essentially sophomores..it's essentially upper classmen. Jones, Domask, Verplancken,  Brown,  Harvey, Muila are juniors, Davanzo's a grad student, Coupet's a senior.

For UNI, Heise is a freshman and Carter is a sophomore. They killed offensively and on the boards. Fyfe didn't play much and Berhow only scored 6 pts.

BM isn't using any excuse..he thinks we should have won that game and so do I. Crap first half killed us.

The criticism of Jones is ridiculous....that was the 1st game in a while where he played like he was almost 100 %, and once again he was trying to save a two-man team. None of his drives to the basket was ill-advised. He was fouled a bunch of times on those, a few of which the crap refs actually called. 20 pts!! Incredible effort by Jones and Domask. Two on five basketball.

Carter is a soph the way Lance and Domask are Sophs. They’re lead by a 4th year player. They have 4th and 5th year players. How many times do you have to hear every coach in the valley say that experience wins in the valley before you believe them? Maybe we can calm down until we have senior leaders year in and year out that are the oldest kids on the court.

Who wants to run him off? Might take 6 or 7 years but he will get it done or die trying! He's not a pile of BS like Barbecue and I'm sure he'll work his butt off. No complacency there.

Just drop the "we're young" excuse - simply not true anymore.

Everybody has freshmen. Compare ours to theirs and see how they develop over time.

We're one or two talents from being a top 50 team IMO.

Talent isn't quite there yet, but it might be sitting on the bench.

Some teams are listing players a year down because of the COVID year, which is dumb.  SIU lists the players as their actual year.

The way Lance Jones is shooting FTs, I would say SOME of his drives are ill-advised. At times he is trying to thread the needle when there just isn't any wiggle room and any time you are doing it to "save the team" then maybe your strategy needs to be re-evaluated. That's my crap and I'm sticking to it.

Keep,

I think this is just a funeral for those of us who thought MAYBE SIU could take a step forward in a down Valley year. Preseason the league looked really tough. Out of conference results showed it to be different. So, I’m just in what I call a MILD-mourning.

For what it is worth...

Bruce Weber finished year three at SIU with a 16-14 record during a total rebuild.

This was AFTER a 20 win NIT year. Coach hasn’t accomplished that yet. He doesn’t get the rope Bruce got.

Everybody here wants Mullins to see this class out. Nobody wants him fired. This is just over-protective drivel from a select few that shiver in their boots anytime the development of this program is questioned.

Everybody here wants Mullins to succeed.

Going forward,

I really hope we find more ways to get Plank and D’Amico involved in the offense. Those two AND Banks need to be more consistently confident in their game. I’d put that above wins and losses. They have to show development. Hopefully we can see some improvement by the midway mark of conference play.

Bruce took over a total dumpster fire.  As much as people hate B***y he didn't have the program in that bad of a place, SIU was an average program under him.  Mullins did have to rebuild a ton his first year but was also handed Lance Jones by the previous staff.  Where would SIU be right now without Jones?

I think expectations should really be raised in year 4.  The Seniors are gone at Drake and Northern Iowa, Prim is gone, Loyola is gone, and SIU is going to have an extremely veteran team if the players stay another year.  I'm just extremely skeptical next year is gonna be a big jump up for SIU and Murray State and Belmont are going to come in and jump right to the top of the pack in the Valley.

Yeah, SIU might finish where they were picked in the Valley but we also thought the Valley would be a lot better than it is.  Northern Iowa, Missouri State, and Drake aren't even close to bubble teams right now.  The only team that's hit expectations is Loyola.  SIU has played a bottom 100 schedule in the country and is a 9-7 team with 1 good win all season.

And the development of players hasn't been great.  I haven't seen many players get much better from last season and a few players have declined year to year, that's not what you want to see.

The team SIU is playing tomorrow made the NCAA Tournament in year 3 of DeVries and they saw a complete roster overhaul when he got there in year 1.  And that's at Drake.

Facts

if Diptwat was still the coach Lance  would likely not of come. It was a complete dumpster fire probably worse than what Bruce took over.

the support for that idiot astounds me
