They have been the lowest paid in the area for decades. Their 34 year weatherman is retiring in a couple days.
Channel 3 has always been the low A (rookie ball) station in world of tv news.
I am guessing it has some (a lot?) to do with this:
I would think it played a part in it. TV stations are no better, in fact far worse. Quincy Media acquired WSIL from the Wheelers in the fall of 2018 for $24.5 million. Less than two years later, Gray Television purchased Quincy Media for $92 million. In April of this year, Allen Media Broadcasting bought WSIL, KPOB and other Quincy stations for $380 million. Sad day for the people of Southern Illinois. WSIL news has turned into another propaganda station of ABC. Regardless, good luck to Todd Hefferman. I hope him well in his new job.
What do you mean "propaganda station"?
In a broadcast that has 23 minutes of non-commercial space, there are a large amounts of minutes devoted to national news which repeats things seen on ABC With David Muir. I watch WSIL to watch local news, weather and sports which no longer exists on the 5 o'clock slot. Darren Kinnard was given the boot when Quincy Media took over. Another example is the elimination of the annual "Sounds of the Season" which showcased the talents of area high school choirs at Christmas. It was one of the few times the arts was given some recognition. The Autocracy State is in control. Orwell got it backwards, you are watching Big Brother.

Exactly. If I want National "News," there are other stations for that. Our local news does not spend much time covering anything local anymore. That is all I would watch for too, but I don't watch it anymore.
Good luck to Heff!
Imo, Jim Rasor is one of the best around. I will miss his accurate forecasts, general good humor and down to earth persona. I always assumed that when it came to SIU Heff reported what was fed to him by the sports department. Years ago Rich Herrin basically froze out the paper due to what he considered negative reporting and there was a strained relationship for sometime, IIRC

I've lived in a lot of different TV markets and follow weather more than most and Southern Illinois was spoiled by Jim Rasor. He's one of the best in the business not even factoring in market size.
The team is playing hard and the defense has come around nicely. If they can sustain that defensive tenacity, they’ll be in the hunt most nights and should be an upper-half Valley team.
That said, the offense remains a cause for concern. There’s not enough offensive firepower to beat good teams if Jones and Domask aren’t both scoring at a high clip, and Domask seems a bit skittish for now, though it was great to see him hit some big shots at times in the tournament.
Getting Brown back should help some, though I don’t know that he’s THE answer to Southern’s scoring challenges. Given how things have played out on the injury/illness front, it’s too bad Wonders can’t step in as another secondary scoring option. I’d be willing to trade a little spotty defense for another scorer, though I’m sure they’re making what they feel is the sound long-term decision.
Hopefully Kyler can build off a pretty strong showing against Creighton and some more interior scoring is forthcoming. Muila will bring it on D but is offensively challenged, to put it mildly. Too bad he couldn’t corral that feed from Banks late against the Jays for what would have been a big bucket.

Watch out for Jewish space lasers!! 🤪
Oops that was a lengthy pause

I have the same thoughts here, I believe this is a good team, the key elements are firepower, and speed, hopefully some scoring firepower shows up in conference play this year, the last 2 years it has not, time will tell, and pray someone doesn't transfer to Gonzaga like our last best player, lol
