College football realignment live updates: Arizona, Arizona State and Utah apply to leave Pac-12 for Big 12
on top of Oregon and Washington going yo the now big 18
Conference realignment has really turned me off of major college football. Sucks it flows to basketball as well. I think in the long run, these money grabs are going to catch up to college sports.
The PAC 12 is about to destroy the Mountain West in my opinion. Maybe the Dakotas and Missouri State finally get their FBS shot now.
There's been some talk about Washington State and Oregon State merging with the Mountain West. Seriously doubt you'll see Stanford or Cal joining a conference with the likes of Wyoming and Boise State for example... Their academic highfalutin'ess would not allow that. I could see those two in the Big 10.
Washington and Oregon both took less than a full share to join the Big 10.. can't believe they're getting less than freaking Rutgers, which in my opinion does not belong in the Big 10 and I'm not sure Nebraska does either, since it's the only school that doesn't belong to the Association of American Universities.

The problem is I’m not sure the Big 10 wants them. And if they don’t want them, what do those schools do?

Im pretty sure stanford and cal are both going to be joining the big 10, which will then be 20 teams, and divided into a big 10 east and a big 10 west.
Chip Kelly the UCLA coach says just have one big conference and then divisions like the NFL like AFC West and NFC Central Etc and that would solve a lot of the travel problems and keep traditional rivalries.
Big money for coaches, schools, etc is ruining college athletics IMO. Tradition and loyalty and school spirit are taking it on the chin.
It's nothing short of a damn travesty what college athletics is coming to. The entire point of conferences is to have a group of like-minded schools, similiar in size and budget, in the same geographical location. Such a shame that they are going to make Washington volleyball travel to New Jersey to face mighty Rutgers on a Tuesday.
College football has been waning on me for years now. The more I watched the CFP and the National Championship game, the more and more I see NFL Lite. Ever try to watch the FCS National Championship game? They can't let those kids have three hours, they have to shove the upcoming Natty game to us between every snap.
I tell you what, I used to fool myself as to trying to convince myself that my SIU - our SIU - was bigger and badder and more important than it really is. And also the MV(F)C and our peer Universities. But the more that this arms race goes on (and will continue to go on), it's helping me accept that my little SIU will be in its corner of the college athletics landscape and that some people will care, most will not. Like, I don't think I'm necessarily bitter - is that the right word? - anymore. The craziness and endless greed has just made me realize that I can only do what I can do. After 20 years, I'm finally content with standing along King Tut's tomb to root on the guys in their final walk to the field, just before rushing into Saluki Stadium to hopefully find a vacant seat behind the Saluki sideline.
(And don't even get me started on the transfer portal, unless you have a couple hours to kill.)
It's an odd, weird feeling, I tell you. I just hate the way that it's going so much that.....*poof*....I'm just about over it.
@obd uncledogpound: We seem to be in the same frame of mind!! Sad state of affairs!
The Power 5 currently consist of 69 teams including Notre Dame that doesn't belong to a conference but yet is Power 5 anyway. 69 teams could be split 8 ways into 8 divisions consisting of 8 or 9 teams. Splitting it that way could restore regional rivalries. Then conferences could focus on basketball and Olympic sports. Maybe with divisions the four teams that entered the Big 10 from the west find a way to reunify with their currently orphaned Pac 4.
If it's all about the money, then organize the system in a way that maximizes rivalries because that's what will get people to tune in to watch on Saturdays. Without the rivalries, very few people care about college sports.
The Group of 5 could then host their own playoff much like the Power 5 already does and then we'd have a more logical three tier system for D1 college football. This doesn't affect SIU because unlike the G5 and P5 our division is the one regulated by the NCAA.

Mind you this would only be binding for football, in other sports conferences would be the traditional P5 we're used to.
