Looks and sounds like Moreno has a nice touch around the basket and knows how to use his body defensively, but conditioning is an issue. Those who complained about Ebube’s conditioning for 2-3 years, be aware Scottie would run circles around this dude.
Moreno can probably help in a big man rotation but I’d say the 5 position is the Dawgs’ biggest question going into the season.
I've been hearing good things about Moreno. I think he's going to have a big impact this year.

Let’s hope. If he (or Webber) emerge as a legit, starting-caliber MVC big man, I don’t see why this team can’t stack up with anyone in the Valley.

Scottie couldn't run circles around an Oak tree - he had to have a scooter to get to class!
From the vids, Moreno looks a lot more facile around the basket and has more moves than just a dunk. Unfortunately, about as poor a FT shooter as SE.

While not great by any means 52% is still quite a bit better than 38% lol
Having watched all the coach and player interviews, I’m optimistic Nagy can hit the ground running with a strong first season, especially given the state of the Valley, with most rosters in transition. And this might be the most athletic team SIU has had since the Lowery NCAA teams.
Here are a few things I’m most curious about once the season begins:
1). How deep will rotation go? I don’t think Nagy is known for playing a very deep bench, but I’m also not sure he’s had many rosters with this much depth. If he only plays 7-8 guys significant minutes, there are some pretty interesting players (Bey? Webber? Massey? Sharp?) who could be stuck in numbers game.
2). What will Mayo’s role be? He came up in several interviews as a primary team leader, but it seems like he’s destined to be a sixth man type if you buy that Elliott, Dibba, Davis and Sykes all will/should start at the 1-4 spots. If Mayo starts ahead of Elliott, you don’t really have a point guard in the starting mix, and handling defensive pressure could be an issue.
3). I continue to think the 5 spot is where SIU is most vulnerable, so very interested to see both who emerges there and how much they go with a traditional big like Webber or Moreno vs. leaning into the roster’s athleticism with smaller lineups with Hensley or Massey. Either way, hopefully Nagy’s rep for getting good play out of his bigs shows up.
Less than 100 days until tip-off vs. Charleston!
Moreno hasn't been playing basketball for a long time and his ceiling is considerably higher than it is right now. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can become in the next 2 seasons.
Coach Nagy
Coach definitely is a straight shooter. He does not heap on the praise lol. He said his rotation will probably only be a 7 to 8 man rotation 😬

I like the honesty from coach, does put a bit of a damper on expectations haha

You aren't going to find many teams that play more than an 8 man rotation normally. Last year Wright State had 9 guys play 8+ mins a game it seems
Might have to replay that again tomorrow because I feel like there was some interesting foreshadowing dropped in some of Nagy’s commentary. One thing that was consistent in his interviews at the start and the end of the summers is his belief that this should be a really good defensive team, so we’ll have to see how that plays out.
As far as only playing 8 guys regularly, that’s going to be quite interesting, because you can easily get to 6-7 guys who seem like they’ll be locks to play. And Nagy said Massey has been the team’s best rebounder, so you’d have to think there will be some minutes for him.
Massey is the best big man on the team as of now. It’s not a question of if he’s going to play. It’s who is his backup? If he’s not starting it means someone else stepped up big time. Moreno’s skill will get him minutes but he’s got a long way to go with his conditioning.
Nagy believes the following:
He will play eight guys. He doesn't believe we have a true PG to run an offense like he's used to. He did say there are several athletes who can bring the ball up. Says he will have to coach differently than he's accustomed to due to the lack of a true PG. He said this team will not be a good shooting team but a team that will have to get out in transition and score at the rim.
He said Kennard is an animal, Dibba is super athletic, and he was really happy Hensley came back and that he's been impressive. He praised those three and the versatility they will bring to the team.
