I’ll keep saying it, if you’re going to play a D2 game, I’d rather have it start the season. That way you get a lot of guys on the court, which will be especially helpful this season. I hate the D2 game in the middle of the season like last year.
So..........are there NO insiders that can give any REAL insight on the recent scrimmage and/or how any of the players are looking so far? A 30 second clip of highlights only is nice, but not very telling. And the coaches are only going to tell the media vague and/or positive remarks.
Well we haven't played Western Kentucky yet. Western Kentucky played SIU-E and beat them handily in a high scoring scrimmage. Xavier played Notre Dame on Saturday and lost in their only scrimmage so far. I think the report of us playing Xavier was incorrect as most reports I see has them playing Kent State in their other secret scrimmage. So Barkeep I guess you are inferring we got beat by someone else in our 1st scrimmage. I am guessing we are playing Western Kentucky on Saturday. What I have heard you don’t want to read.

Played Loyola yesterday. Reading between the lines, sounds like it was a pretty rough go, with a lot of turnovers.

Interesting that Kennard Davis is the one he called out as being impressive. That’s good to hear.

Yep. And speaking of freshmen, he mentioned Miller and Sharp as the guys who will help XJ with ball-handling, so that would lead you to believe Sharp isn't redshirting, unless something changes.

Yeah when asked for the encouraging things, offensively the ball moved was the first thing out of his mouth...that sounds like someone searching for a positive. If we got drubbed by Loyola, who is likely better than last year, but probably not close to the talent we are going to face in non-con, we've got a long way to go.
To be fair, it also sounds like a lot of the expected starters have been out most of fall camp (some still out), which doesn't feel ideal for a team with so many new faces. I'll wait until I can actually see them play, but this has me concerned right now.
Didn't Mullins play the entire team against Bama last year in the charity scrimmage? Not saying he did the same against Loyola, but it's possible - although maybe Loyola did something similar.

What remains to be seen with this team is if there’s much of a dropoff between the starters and the bench. Not yet apparent if there’s much of a gap. Southern needs a few guys to emerge offensively.
If Barkeep isn't being overly positive, then consider me very concerned. I had been cautiously optimistic to this point, but without any real positive news for this year's team or in recruiting, we could be pretty bad this year as well as see the post season drought extended for the foreseeable future. If that is the case, I think we might be seeing the beginning of the end for this staff, and rightfully so.
I’m the negative one here at this point but it shouldn’t be a surprise if this team struggles with Loyola. Loyola is probably an NCAA Tournament team this year if they get somewhat decent coaching and SIU is a team picked 9th in a weak MVC. Also, it seems like D’Amico, Cade, and maybe Rupert were out.
This team has to show some kind of arrow pointing up after this season and that would start with Kennard Davis. If this season ends and I don’t think SIU can be remotely competitive again next year, then it’s time to move on. Even Hinson was putting out competitive Valley teams in years 6 and 7 even though we knew he would never get us over the hump.
If SIU comes out of this year with Kennard Davis, Cade Hornecker, Ebube, etc all improving then they can hit the portal hard for a few impact guards and be competitive next year. If those guys aren’t making strides though, next year is gonna be rough too.
There is an open scrimmage that season tickets holders can attend tomorrow night from 5:30 to 6:30. Would be nice to get a report from those in attendance. Would go myself since I am a season ticket holder but I have a work obligation tomorrow night.
Poster on the Loyola board said that the Ramblers won 92-64
