Great effort tonight both halves and these guys proved they can play with anyone in the MVC with this kind of energy and effort.
Played much better D, especially 2nd half.
Shame a questionable call on JF and Steffe won the game for them.
Saturday we get our first win at home against Mo State.
I want to preface my comment by stating that I thought this was the best game we’ve played in some time…now what defense were you watching that was good?
They scored 90 points and shot 53%/39% from the field. Got to the line 20 times. Out rebounded us by almost 10 (gave up 1.23 ppp). Whatever metric you want to look at, they didn’t play much better. It’s about par for the course. How many baskets did we give up in transition after a made fucking basket? People not knowing who they are guarding? Not getting back fast enough or stopping the ball?
I liked the overall effort, we finally shot the ball at a decent clip, but we won’t have very many more offensive games like that this year if history is any indication… and still we lost. I don’t want to be too down right now given what we’ve seen prior to this game, but the defense is still not good. Better than we’ve been playing I guess, but that bar was pretty damn low.
I don’t disagree with this but the only thing I’ll say is Belmont at home dices most defenses up, game after game and season after season.
But no doubt the defense and rebounding has to tighten up to beat anyone in the MVC. And Dibba and Davis need to continue to look more like they did in the second half.
Sure Belmont is good at home…but we didn’t make them earn it. They hit some tough shots no doubt, but we also gave them a ton of easy buckets. The transition baskets off a make drive me crazy…on more than one occasion. Just watching guys trotting back pointing like…who am I guarding? Do we need the colored wristbands like my 5 year old uses? You’ve got orange. That shit is inexcusable to me.
It was pretty telling when Nagy said "Hensley is our best interior defender." One of our biggest criticisms of Mullins was how he kept trying to squeeze 4s (D'Amico, Hensley) into the 5 spot.
I don't mean that as a knock against Nagy or Hensley. But if a stretch 4 is our best interior defender, we are sorely lacking for a true enforcer inside.
Hey, if you’re gonna trash SIU and Carbondale get the F off the board. Seriously. F off.
This guy is rooting for the coach to fail, for the athletic director to fail, for the school to fail, for Carbondale to fail. He is NOT a true SIU fan and is the ONLY regular current contributor to this board I would say that about. True fans might second-guess and criticize and question whether this coaching hire was the right one (which is fine as long as it's not malicious), but they never, ever root for epic failure. Really, even after Mullins' final team went 1-7 or whatever it was against the top four MVC teams, blew several big second-half leads in losses and finally fell against a beatable team in the opening round of the conference tournament, was anybody taking pleasure from these failures? I sure wasn't, and I don't think anyone else was.
I don't understand why Steffe was even in the game on that play. You've got to have you best defenders on the floor in that situation. Mayo is a much better defender and is a savvy, experienced veteran. We still had a timeout to use if we got a stop and wanted to get our best offensive players into the game.bad call - Luke Martin flipping out - looked like an oscar winning flop to me
I think he fouled him. Brutal to foul in that situation but I think he was understandably surprised he pulled the trigger with so much time left and got caught lunging. A killer.

He grazed him - baby foul that would never have been called in the NBA. Great acting job - flops are illegal. Terrible call at that point of the game. Then Dibba gets fouled worse on a three - no call.
Also they fouled Hensley out on a bullshit nothing call. Nagy's lucky he didn't get teed up he was so pissed with the refs.

Minor details. We outscored them by 8 2nd half. They made some very tough shots and are good shooters. Also more than once we forced shot clock violations 2nd half. Don't know if I've seen that all year. I think the D was not great but it was greatly improved from previous games. Hensley was hampered by foul trouble and they took advantage of it in the paint. I also saw a lot of poky hands and serious defensive effort by the Salukis. We had 9 steals and we fouled a lot 2nd half, which tells me we're giving good effort. Unfortunately, they are an excellent FT shooting team. 13 - 15 2nd half. I think they ended the game making 7 FTs in a row.
We played way better than we have in a good while. Good confidence builder. I think we beat Mo. State Saturday.
I'm taking it as a good sign that I'm very upset we lost a close game we could have won as opposed to being disgusted yet fairly unemotional otherwise after multiple blowout losses. It feels good to care a little more.
after last nights much improved performance, our NET has jumped up to 277. we are sandwiched right between Dartmouth and Harvard. nice neighbors to have!
Hopefully we'll finish ahead of Sister Mary's School for Girls! I stopped looking at the NET earlier than ever this year. The good news is now 8 teams play on Thursday at Arch Madness instead of the previous 10 team tournaments where only 4 teams played on Thursdays. 4 byes instead of 2. We'll have more company on Thursday. Obviously, the goal now is to have this team steadily improve as the conference season progresses and be playing their best basketball going into Arch Madness. If we can salvage some momentum we will have a better chance at retaining the players we would like to retain such as Davis, Elliott, Aligbe, etc.after last nights much improved performance, our NET has jumped up to 277. we are sandwiched right between Dartmouth and Harvard. nice neighbors to have!
