those 2 blown home games with leads late are season killers. Staring 3-6 in the face. All about not playing Thursday now which seems like a tall order
Didn’t get to see much of the game last night but hoped for a better showing in what was a pretty big game in the standings. They can’t seem to get more than 1-2 guys playing well offensively on the same night, and that’s not going to cut it if you want to be a good team.
Mullins & Co. need to make these guys stay after practice and shoot free throws. It cost them the game. In addition, our offense shouldn't consist of Jones, Domask, and/or whomever else drive to the basket while the other 4 guys stand around. We have a long way to go to get back to one of the elite teams in The Valley. Boxing out and fighting for rebounds seems to be lost with this group too. 😤
Basic fundamental coaching
I’m sure the team shoots lots of free throws. I think there is plenty of fair critiquing about the overall offensive scheme and productivity (or lack thereof), but I’m not going to fault the coaches for the subpar FT shooting. That one’s on the players.
Some random thoughts from a very frustrating game and also in regards to some of the previous posts:
- Kyler should be starting. How many slow starts have we had this year? Kyler is showing his Freshman self again, and no one in our front court is that efficient offensively down low.
- I only recall two shots from Marcus last night that were not out of the low post, and I believe both came late in the second half. Marcus is a stellar three point shooter, so why we are not running him around off multiple screens is beyond me - especially when he's posting up against taller, athletic forwards which Bradley has a never-ending supply of.
- SVP needs to be required to shoot 5-10 threes a game; dude is what the 3rd best 3 point shooter in the conference? He needs to be aggressive and have set plays run for him. We absolutely need his offense.
- Out of our 7 losses we've averaged a point differential of -4.1; for those standing near the cliff I would remind you that this team has been arguably in every game, and while the W/L doesn't show it there is still potential there if they can figure out how to improve offensively. Yeah, we have two games coming up against Loyola, but every team in the Valley has to play them twice. Winning the league is out of the picture, but Arch Madness is still viable with the defense we have.
- Terry Roberts: did someone say we were in on him on the recruiting trail? Imagine him on our team; he has pro potential with how shifty he is, and he just outclassed everyone we had guard wise not named Lance Jones.
- Next year we need a big time scorer and some support down low. If Kyler gets the green light to start the rest of the year I think that's a positive step forward, but Ebube, that new recruit from Texas (forgetting his name), or a transfer is also really needed. If we get both of those pieces then I think we get a complete team that can contend; until then we'll just be waiting for that one or three game stretch where we seem to be clicking offensively, but we've all seen enough of a sample size this season to know this team just doesn't have a scoring punch to win.
Boring offense looks like Rec Center game, but FTs the story of another loss.

I still think being in every game, not having played nearly our best game does give you the feeling they could make a run in STL. It’s why the focus is solely now on getting top 6

KF played 20 min to JDs 12. I agree KF has some offensive chops if allowed to stay in the game long enough to get into some offensive flow and if the others get him the ball or the offensive scheme makes a point of getting it down low instead relying on low-percentage threes.
Our D has been good, but our offense needs a lot of work and changes IMO. KF was effective last night and I agree he should get more minutes. I really don't like it when players get very short minutes on the floor. Just can't get into that game flow then.
Someone said some NBA scouts are looking at Roberts. He's quick and has some size. No doubt he and Jones were two of the more talented players out there. We did a good job on Roberts 2nd half - he ended up with 18 but 5 of those were FTs in the last minute. Mast killed us.

Free throws have directly cost this team multiple wins this year. That alone would make me sick if I was on this team. It'd chap my ass so bad I'd be in the gym shooting throws till my knees dropped out.. 🤬
--Insert something witty here--
Coupet has looked gassed the past three games.
I didn't see this game, but the 2 previous game he absolutely looks little or no energy
I see a lot of people asking why we don’t have Domask or Verplanken running off a bunch of screens to get them open looks at the three and IMO neither have the skill set for that to work.
From what I’ve seen from them so far in their career, neither is a catch and shoot guy off a screen…at least not with any regularity (successfully that is). They both seem to prefer a set shot from outside which is why you see so many sets where they try to get the ball to the post for a kick out to someone, typically this is where we have the most success from deep.
Thinking more, I honestly don’t know if we have a guy on the roster that we can run off of screens that has a quick release jumper (think back to all those Marty Simmons coached Evansville teams where they had a guy they would run off screens relentlessly until they could get him an open look Colt Ryan, DJ Balentine, etc.).
Don’t get me wrong, I think our offense is stagnant a lot. We have too much standing around and watching while someone goes one on one. Feels like no one wants to back cut, we rarely slip any screens, or do anything to keep the defense moving etc. They need to figure something out to get these guys going because it feels really hard to score almost every trip down the floor.

Their inability to beat any good teams tells me there’s not a run coming. The players give their all every game and nobody can question their effort, there’s just not enough here to beat good teams. We’re almost into February and their 2nd and 3rd best wins by KenPom are Valpo and Indiana State.

I’m stunned at this point that there are still quite a few people who think this team either is or has a chance to be good.
They’re just not good. Opposing coaches know it too.
if it was ANYONE other than golden boy Bryan Mullins (who I like a lot) coaching and recruiting this squad, they would be raked over the coals.
It's laughable that some fans on here are still blaming the refs or saying we just had tired legs from playing too many games. A mediocre Bradley team absolutely dominated us last night. Excuses aren't going to make things any better.
We just aren't good. We don't have the horses to compete with decent teams yet. We aren't going to contend for a conference title and there won't be any magical run through the Valley Tournament. Avoiding Thursday would be an accomplishment at this point.
I still want to believe Mullins is the guy for the job, though. And I still have hopes for next year with Ebube, Wonders, and Hornecker joining the squad. I also expect us to add an experienced combo guard. Will that be enough to get us over the hump and headed in the right direction? I'll leave that up to speculation.
