I think the coaching staff knows a hell of a lot more about basketball than what “we” think “we” do.
Then what's the point of this website? Lol nobody here truly thinks they know better. It's about discussion
Who would rather have coaching someone who seems to be adjusting or another rebuildWhat are we - the Big 10? Crazy to give coaches an extension because of one big win. Evaluate after the season. Should always be that way.
Is his contract up? I'm not for a rebuild either necessarily, but I think extensions in the middle of the season are just a bad idea, don't care who the coach is. There's too much Pro stuff going on in college sports as it is. Next thing you know, we'll be firing coaches in the middle of the season. (OK in soccer evidently 🙂 )
And some coaches are really, really good at rebuilds. (Scherz, Kill etc.)

Next year is his last year but you'd like to not have a coach go into a lame-duck year for recruiting purposes.

I thought he deserved one after last season. So after seeing how this season has gone, yes, I still think he does.
I'm more open to an extension now but Domask & Jones being good Big Ten starters right now looks really bad on the staff. I do think that changes are being made after last year though so maybe they've learned from it. I still worry about what this team looks like without X though next season.
I've seen people make the same comment about Domask and Jones. While I don't think it's necessarily wrong, I do think it is a matter of perspective. The fact that this staff took two guys who were not highly recruited and turned them into Big 10 caliber starters says something. Now there is a lot to be said for the extra year of eligibility both have and last years shortcomings, but it's not like Drake and Bradley were bad teams last year.
I know this is a results driven program and for a lot of people winning is the only result that matters. However, as someone else said above, I'm having more fun watching this team this year than any Saluki team in recent memory and this program is one that I am proud to be a fan of.
I'm not upset Marcus and Lance left the program and I don't blame that on Mullins at all. I'm upset we had them for 4 years and couldn't make even an NIT with them. They barely got to Saturday at Arch Madness with them, that Missouri State game last year easily could have gone the other way and it was an ugly win.
I do think there are improvements being made to the offense and player development is starting to look like a plus but in the end, I want to see this team back in the NCAA Tournament and to do that, this team needs to start having more success in St. Louis in March. The fact that they haven't played on Sunday since the 2007 Sweet 16 season bugs the crap out of me. Even Valpo and Evansville have accomplished that in this span.
And I know this offseason it was all about "how are we going to replace Domask and Jones?" and we're going to do the same thing this offseason with X. X has been so important to this SIU team that he might be tougher to replace than Domask and Jones were. I think this staff is going to have a lot to sell with back to back good years (if this season continues) and the development of Domask, Jones, and X.

Here is one thing about Mullins recruits, they are going to get better because that's the character being recruited. I am not saying someone takes the leap X has next year, that is a tall task, but who would have ever believed X would be doing this? One thing I know for sure, this staff was left with a bare cupboard when Bryan took over and we had success right away, our 2 best players left and we are having success right away. I worry less and less about the players year to year when they have seemed to have an answer most of the time... apart from when your best player goes down mid season, that is a riddle most coaches don't have an answer too.
I must say that it was an absolute thing of beauty seeing the contingent of Saluki fans at the game Saturday. They were certainly loud, and into the game. ISU did not attempt nearly the free throws as last year. However, I was a bit concerned when Big C received two quick fouls at the start, but circumstances evened after that. X was his usual amazing self, and Trent Brown was huge as well. Both players have indeed improved their shot, and bring many intangibles' as fifth year seniors. I knew that Hensley was going to be a boost to our offense, but I witnessed improvement in his defense that is a even better sign of things to come.
Need to continue this mini run, and extend the winning streak vs Valpo on Wednesday. They are 0-4 in MVC, however, played much better in their recent away game at UIC.
This team continues to surprise.
GO DAWGS!!!
If THAT'S the Trent Brown we get the rest of the season, I have no problem with him getting his minutes. He still got blown by a couple times on defense and had some tough match-ups on switches. But if he's knocking down shots, we can live with that I guess. He does play hard on-ball defense.
The problem with him and X playing 36-40 minutes every game is we lose them both after this year and we are not developing any replacements at the 1 and 2. We are going to have to hit the Portal hard for Guards.

This is going to be a huge portal year. They can’t afford to whiff. They probably need at least 1 of 2 big splashes if they want to win the Valley like the Sycamores just did.
We need Swope or Conwell - level guys from the portal. So many players hit the portal now, seems you just have to do well there to be successful as a mid.
