Another quick couple observation from someone who was at the game. As much as everyone wants to jump on Mullins, which in some cases is warranted. Especially when it comes to his poor use of our lineups, especially our centers earlier in the year. Mullins did an outstanding job of alternatively substituting Rupert and Muila on offensive and defensive possessions down the stretch. Muila played outstanding defense and got some huge rebounds down the stretch and Rupert was in on offensive possessions most of the time due to a lot of dead balls. Also, Banks and Newton played well in the 2nd half and that's why you didn't see Johnson come back after he was sat early in the 2nd half with his 3rd foul.
FYI - Net rating is what the ncaa committee considers when it comes to the NCAA tourney at larges and seeds. I'm not insinuating that SIU will get any consideration for the tournament, they won't. However, KenPom, Warren Nolan, etc. are not tools used by the ncaa committee. So why, pray tell, did SIU move up 5 points in NET ratings if they moved down in KenPom? And why do we pay so much attention to these numbers? What was St. Peters rated going into tournament last year?

Exactly. I’ll look at KenPom for the info sometimes, but people shouldn’t use it as much as they do. It’s not used by the NCAA, and quite frankly, it’s not that good. NET is what matters. We got a road win last night, and out NET went up. Our failure to close out a win that should’ve been closer to 10 points cost us more of a gain than we could’ve got.
Hmm, that seems odd, as Reis pointed out postgame KenPom was predicting a 70-68 SIU win. We won on the road girls, take it for what it is. Onward to to the Murray State juggernaut (KenPom 170)! PS- the Cashew Chicken at China Palace was quite tasty, and Kyle has an adorable little baby boy. Merry Christmas!!!🎁SIU is down to #120 on KenPom, down 30 spots from opening night. SIU finished #125 last year.
Thank you for stopping by!!
One note I would add to last game…. The atmosphere was intense. But I might just feel that way because I was sitting 3 rows behind Mullins and crew. It’s a lot different of an experience than my season tickets in the second level at SIU. 😃
If we care about NET ranking SIUe is 96 and we are 108
Meanwhile EIU beats Iowa on the road as a +30 pt underdog. Next year I propose SIU schedules more games against D2 and D3 schools.
Net is better than kenpom because it doesn't include expected strength. Like it or not, it's a more pure analysis. NET also gets more accurate as the season goes along. Kenpom has an underachieving, mostly unimpressive Dayton team at #61 and their NET is a more realistic #88. Kenpom has them 27 slots higher due to their expected strength. That is not accurate. If we care about NET ranking SIUe is 96 and we are 108
Happy to report I started that cheer.SIU fans made it a great atmosphere. The SIU chant was the loudest point of the game. I'd say we had 300-400 out of the 1700 or so there. Attendance is way down for mid majors and we are holding our own in home attendance, comparably. Still hoping attendance picks up after break though. And by the way, their arena sucks!! I’ve never sat in a more uncomfortable seat (that moved forward when anyone 1-3 seats away moved forward) and just buying a bottle of water at the concession stand was an adventure in patience. Be glad that we have the good old Banterra Center. It was a great SIU crowd at the game, loud and into the game. Very entertaining.

Excellent observations, although I disagree with the Banks/Newton comment. I thought they played poorly, but admit that is simply my perspective. More importantly, thanks for getting out to the game and supporting the Dawgs. They have admitted that travelling fans make a big difference in games !!

Onward to Murray! 💪🏻 Hopefully we bring a big group! I’ll be there!
@insaluki I think Newton played well and so did Banks. Banks gave us some points and Newton played very well defensively.
A final question: very late in the game during a timeout, coach Monaghan was looking towards and yelling at someone at the scorer's table. He was absolutely livid; I have never seen a coach any more upset. Does anyone know what that was about? There were a number of "quirky" things occurring in the game at the time.

@dawgbytes Was that when they changed the score and we lost one point? I think they gave Wonders credit for a 3 earlier and it was changed to a 2 point basket??
