Marcus Domask postgame:
Just got back from the game. I don't know what the heck it is about road games at Valpo but it seems the weather is bad each time. I live about 20 miles away and it took nearly an hour and a half to get there. In those 20 miles, there were more than 15 cars off the road, which were basically sheets of ice. Anyway, it was nice see some of the parents. There weren't many people at the game overall (due in part to the weather) but I felt like SIU fans were louder than Valpo fans for most of the game..............until of course the prolific near game giveaway.

Yes, the weather has been awful for the games at Valpo in recent years. It did contribute to a terrible crowd tonight, which made for good conditions to get a road win.
Really nice game by Banks tonight … hopefully he can build on it.
I get the comments about Muila being a risk to have on the floor in crunch time because of his unspeakably awful FT shooting but you can also get beat giving up offensive rebounds, and D’Avanzo and Filewich (who also is a bad FT shooter) give up too any of those. A definite catch-22 …
JD might honestly be the worst FT shooter I've seen in my life. That being said, he was a good presence and his rebounding was strong tonight.
The entire team has seemed to struggle from the FT line this year. Domask missed a couple tonight and one was a critical miss. Jones missed all 4 of his FT tonight and 2 of them were critical. And don't look now but Jones 0-4 dropped his season FT shooting to 58%. Trust me, I am not comparing Domask and Jones to JD but the entire team could stand to improve at the line.
For those old enough, you’ll remember the FT shooting disaster that a young Jermaine Dearman was. We used to call it The Jermaine Dearman Free Throw Experience.
He worked at it, and became serviceable from the line.
Lance is hurting. As long as he’s hurting, that’s a major issue for the team. That said, HUGE for Dalton to step up. Looks like a different guy with the mask off.
Also, would really like to see D’Amico worked into the offense more. This dude is a heady player. Has a real feel for space that is rare in a freshman.
Would also like Muila to go straight up when he gets the ball inside. Stop thinking. It shouldn’t be a fire drill every time he gets the ball.
All wins are good! Hopefully the D is ready for MSU. Tough stretch coming up.

Dearman shot 42.5% his Freshman year and improved every year and shot 64.1% his Senior year so this is probably a good example. Although if Muila shot 42.5% from the line, it would be a win at this point.
@salukiworld dang! I knew this was worse, but we might have an all-timer on our hands. Some of these FTs are barely skimming the rim!

After 11 days off I will take the win as far as the struggles to close out games this is a concern but with all the new pieces and all of the injuries plus the pause for covid practice time has probably been altered tremendously I would expect this problem will hopefully start to sort its way out in future weeks with a healthy well practiced squad. This team is not alone in this problem just check out the games played by MSU Loyola and Bradley this week take the win improve and get the next one
Southern shot 55.6% from the field. Marcus Domask shot 75%, 2s and 3s. But we want everyone to make 80% of their free throws. My mother used to say “people in Hell want ice water”.

Muila's FT% was 29% going into last night, which now puts it down to around 25% or maybe less. That's absolutely unacceptable. He could shoot granny shots and make more than that.

I've been saying this for a long time. Even if JD never becomes a good FT shooter, the underhand shot practically enforces a nice soft touch because the ball is coming up to the rim, not down.
Nobody shoots it anymore, but everybody should at least try it in practice. (Filewich too)
BM said postgame that JD practices his shooting and his FTs. He needs to change his form completely.
Wilt Chamberlain tried underhand for a year and his percentage went up 10% but he quit doing it - felt like a sissy - which is absolutely silly. In his 100pt game, he made 28 of 32 FTs shooting underhand.
The NBA has instituted the Hack a Shaq rule where fouls in the last 2 mins. also give the fouled team possession. No such rule in college.
