66-62... pretty close.Alright, time to move past Saturday. To win the conference, have to win out. Would probably split at the top. To get a bye 3/4 for sure does it and 2/4 maybe does it... Huge game, hopefully Saturday was humbling and motivating, something a team in FEB may need from time to time to refocus. Let's start a 7 game winning streak.
SIU - 67
Valpo - 60
Don't you think every coach Muilia has ever had has tried to break his free throw shooting down and start over?
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
@beadmedaddio i dont. it certainly appears like this staff never tried and i have no idea about his high school years but they may have just let it go. anything else would clearly yield better results

This all really just depends on a coaches philosophical approach. Once you hit high school and beyond though, particularly at higher levels of high school and most definitely in college, fewer and fewer coaches will actually spend valuable time working with players on individual mechanics. In college, usually in the late summer/early fall, the focal point is conditioning and building team chemistry through multiple avenues. Then as the season nears it shifts heavily to offensive/defensive schemes, video prep for upcoming opponents, etc.
Long story short, usually once you get to college you'll find that most coaches are 99.9% focused on team-building/team related activity. Generally, the onus falls on the players to work on weaknesses, request game film for self-study etc. Of course, you can always go to the coaches for advice, which can certainly be a useful resource; a route Muila definitely should've taken at some point.

I think there was work done in the off season. He uses two hands this year.@beadmedaddio i dont. it certainly appears like this staff never tried and i have no idea about his high school years but they may have just let it go. anything else would clearly yield better results
Anyone here that thinks the coaches can simply “fix” his free throw with some mechanics work clearly doesn’t know what is going on. His free throw is different this year than last (not necessarily better), but that shows that there was work out in effort to improve.
Think of it another way. Try teaching calculus to someone who just flat out doesn’t get high level math. Even though it seems basic to some, it just flat out isn’t to another.
Some guys just flat out don’t have it. Thankfully Muila provides value in other areas.

this may be true, and you can't teach a 5th grade girl to dunk the ball, but you can teach her how to shoot a free throw.
Muila was a 25.7% free throw shooter at the JUCO level. Technically he's improved at SIU.
Watch Muila next time he shoots a free throw. His practice stroke right before he gets the ball looks pretty good. Elbow tucked and in line with his body and stays that way through elevation and follow through in a smooth motion (his follow through with his hand, is right at the basket). Then watch his actual stroke when the ball is in his hand. Elbow chicken wings out, jerky elevation and his follow through is angled b/c of his elbow and pushes the ball to the side.
It's like my golf swing, looks good when I take my practice swing, but put a ball down in front of me and I forget all my mechanics.
I was far from anything special as a basketball player but I can shoot a free throw pretty well. It is hard to understand how shooting a free throw can be that difficult for someone who has played the game as much as any college player has. I have tried to understand it somewhat by thinking of it like what if I was shooting a free throw with a wiffle ball to a 6" rim.
Free throws are mental too. Muila would probably be a better free throw shooter if he had never shot any before in his life and you could truly start fresh.
Yes he is a bad free throw shooter his minutes late in close games need to be monitored but let's quit beating a dead horse and move on the young man has improved overall since last year in all parts of his game and is an integral part of this team so let us support him
