Hello all,

Old-timer here. Hope all is well with everyone. When SalukiNation closed its shop for the last time, I stayed away for this new Insider for a handful of months. Then I started lurking every so often. Then I began lurking more often. And now, thanks to a substation going down and rendering my co-workers and I in a freezing office with no power, decided to take the afternoon off and thus, this post....Here are my thoughts, feelings, and rants in one topic. (Mods, I could have done this in the Cheetos thread, I know, but my disdain in the current day extends beyond just Burrah.

Point #1: I think the writing is on the wall, ladies and gentlemen. No insider info, just my opinion. Hinson may be gone in a week or two, let alone by March 2 or 3. Kill is no stooge - he has evaluated talent and won at every college football program he coached (which includes the Division 2 school). He knows there is too much talent on the roster to go to Thursday and in front of dwindling attendance and fan apathy. I used to think that Hinson was an above-average in-game coach but, I don't know, it's like the stress of underperforming has just made him have mental blocks...

...Why the constant pick-and-roll * with your best big man? Adjustments, anyone? We don't even set clean picks so it doesn't work more than twice the whole game. My brother-in-law and sister came up from Nashville, TN for the Winthrop game and we all know how that show went. It was his first game ever and her first in 10 years. And we subjected them to that drivel. Even my sister said (about the center who scored 26 pts on us), "They're just setting picks for that big guy until he gets the matchup they want for him." And we let it happen...over...and over...and over again. Adjustments, anyone? Average coaches get fired....but one that brings off-court drama with it? Baggage. Toast.

Point #2 - This is a point that just goes to show how delusional some folks are regarding the state of the program and its coaching. Which leads to less pressure on the administration which leads to extended coaching reigns such as this one. I was having coffee recently with an older relative who knows his fair share of sports - attends all HS basketball and football games, attends all the local holiday tournaments, played D1 college baseball for a year, you get the picture. After the Bradley loss, he told me, "You know, something must have happened since Armon got back. They had Armon suspended for a little while and Bol was hurt for a few games, but now...I don't know. Something must have happened. Something must have happened that we didn't hear about. Something happened that just....I don't know...they...I don't know what's going on with them."...

...HUH? WHAT HAPPENED? They are coached by Burrah is what happened! We're literally going to make the assumption that "something happened" behind closed doors that threw the team off their game rather than opening our eyes and looking at the man on the sidelines?

Point #3 - What has happened to our beloved Missouri Valley? Mercy! I'd like to think that the Valley will rise again and become a multi-bid conference - and I believe it will one day - but when will that "one day" be? The Valley needs to be on Atlantic 10 and Mountain West levels. That is what Doug Elgin and the league office should strive for. You know, we are right next to the A10 and MW in the RPI/NET standings year after year, but they seem to get more exposure and have more postseason success - Why? The bottom of the Valley is not as bad as the bottom of the A10 and MW. But, the top of the Valley is nowhere near the top of the A10 and MW.

Point #4 - This point feeds off the aforementioned one. Who is going to step up and be that badssa next big program? It should be SIU - not only because it's right there for the taking but, from a conference sake standpoint, the Valley tends to rise when SIU has a good program. It's almost as if the other programs have a "Okay, let's get our * together" moment when they see big-time Saluki turnout in STL and our Dawgs hoisting trophies. We need to make a firing and hiring combo that is a total clean-house move.

Point #5 - This points also feeds off the aforementioned one. A COACH IS ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING TO A PROGRAM. Look at Wichita - just a hicktown university in the cornfields who hires an up-and-comer from Winthrop and they take off like a rocket! The talent level was raised, the scheduling was raised, the exposure was greater....

...Valley programs hired three new coaches in the offseason: Darien DeVries looks to be a homerun hire at Drake. Dana Ford is a great hire at Missouri State and has a fantastic recruit class coming in. Walter McCarty is and will continue to attract good talent to Evansville (and I also like that he recently stood up to the subpar officiating. A coach sticking up for this players and calling out the league for accepting mediocre officiating, basically). But now it's time for the next purge of Valley coaches - Burrah, Dan Muller, and probably Brian Wardle need to be shown the door.

MAKE SIU GREAT AGAIN!

 MAKE THE VALLEY GREAT AGAIN!

Thanks for reading.

The UDP comments are generally on-the-mark.

I'm reminded of a couple or three things:

1. Hinson needs to go. He needed to go 2-3 years ago. Perhaps he never should have been hired. BUT...he has not had a stable administration to work with. No excuse. Just the facts. Still no excuse. He needs to go.

2. Jordan Caroline is averaging 18.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game--I watched a bit of last night's Nevada-UNLV game. Caroline can really play--his transfer was a huge loss for Hinson's program.

3. Deion Lavender is playing important minutes for Valparaiso...his leaving, too, was a blow to Hinson's program.

4. As described here: https://www.si.com/nba/2019/01/30/nba-mock-draft-2019-zion-williamson-rj-barrett-ja-morant-cam-reddish?utm_campaign=si-extra&utm_source=si.com&utm_medium=email&utm_content=2019013012PM&eminfo=%7b%22EMAIL%22%3a%22Ez%2fhIK%2bx5AgeZduTjzH5QsPZylZOlg0e%22%2c%22BRAND%22%3a%22SI%22%2c%22CONTENT%22%3a%22Newsletter%22%2c%22UID%22%3a%22SI_EXT_7D0D53B8-9C36-49DD-956B-B3775CFA64B3%22%2c%22SUBID%22%3a%2298933337%22%2c%22JOBID%22%3a%22938045%22%2c%22NEWSLETTER%22%3a%22SI_EXTRA%22%2c%22ZIP%22%3a%22%22%2c%22COUNTRY%22%3a%22CAN%22%7d

...Ja Morant is viewed as perhaps the second pick in the next NBA draft. What a player! Why do I have the feeling that...if Hinson had been fortunate enough to lure him to SIU...that Morant wouldn't shine the way he does at Murray...because of Hinson's oh-so-deliberate offense. Frustratingly, Hinson would not agree with this assessment. In my view, he is wrong.

5. I predict that Hinson will not go quietly into the night.

(1) US COVID-19 statistics (February 29, 2020-June 16, 2020): 2,124,000 reported cases and 115,052 deaths
(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."
(3) Donald Trump [(Jan 20, 2020), when asked if he's worried about a pandemic]: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s — going to be just fine.”

He should of been fired after that large departure of players took place at the of 2014. No excuse should be made if the entire team left.

Ha!   we all know the answer to that.   He did text me a few days ago that he still intends to pay his debt of 18-holes for the bet we had on salukination.     😀   I just wanted to return to celebrate with y'all when Barry's arse is finally canned soon!

...Why the constant pick-and-roll **** with your best big man? Adjustments, anyone? We don't even set clean picks so it doesn't work more than twice the whole game. My brother-in-law and sister came up from Nashville, TN for the Winthrop game and we all know how that show went. It was his first game ever and her first in 10 years. And we let it happen...over...and over...and over again. Adjustments, anyone?

So you can keep him away from the basket where he has a chance to score or grab an offensive rebound?   😥

I've been saying this forever.  BBQ has been doing this all season - totally under utilizing our big guys.

BBQ should, at least a good part of the time, have 3 out and 2 in, so Pippen or Bol or Rudy or Armon can screen for each other and get free for high percentage shots. Last night, a couple of times Fletcher posted up low and Pippen high ... got a couple of baskets out of it.  Don't think this was anything BBQ did - Armon did it on his own.

The only guy that ever sets a screen for the guards 20 ft from the basket is our big man. Guards rarely if ever set picks for each other. That's because if they don't have the ball, they're usually standing there in their lead Converses instead cutting, picking, moving, etc. Rarely, they do a weave, which has dubious value if you can't/don't set good picks.

When we do set picks, they're usually crap and ineffective. The guy setting the pick usually rolls the wrong way so that his back is to ball-handler. High School (or Jr. High) Fundamentals!

I don't know what Hinson and the coaches do in practice (if you can call it that), but it appears they aren't teaching or changing or adjusting.

Defense: we almost never trap or press. If we do press, it's after the game has been decided.  If you saw the Loyola game, you saw a good trapping defense that destroyed our "individual effort" offense.

Last night BBQ let them play alley ball. Because we have better talent than the Sycs and the team shot 60%,  led to a win. That isn't going to happen often.

Speaking of practices, are SIU practices still closed to the public?  If so, that seems strange, if not it would be interesting to go and observe what actually goes on during the hours spent.

I believe the little huckster will go out kicking and screaming.  None of this is his fault and SIU and their fan base should feel fortunate that we play D1 basketball.....end of expectations.  There will be plenty of parting shots.....

God I hope not.  I'd want to contain this like nuclear waste.  I would never want a young and impressionable player or coach to get infected by what goes on in a Hinson practice.
