We sure could have used the goal tending review rule in the 2007 ncaa tournament against Kansas! We probably would have won that game. We so got screwed by the refs that game.I think the refs are on to something with their goal tending calls comedy wherein they decide whether a rule violation affected a shot. Suppose every lane violation we stop the game while refs decide whether the violation had an effect on the game. Or whether 4 steps gave the player an advantage. Simply rigidly applying penalty for a rule violation seems so old fashioned.
Its up to the player if he redshirts, not the coaches. You can't force a kid to redshirt. He will just transfer after the season because you pissed him off.I love this program and team, but the one thing I can't understand is the roster management.
It looks like the 2nd year in a row that we are going to totally blow a player's year of eligibility by killing a redshirt opportunity with meaningless minutes (Hornecker/Sharp).
Ebube finally got some decent run the last couple games and dominated, yet tonight he played a total of 2 minutes.
I like Trent Brown, but in no circumstance does it make sense for him to play 40 minutes a game. Especially in a game like tonight where he isn't hitting shots and he's getting bullied on defense by bigger guards. 15-20 minutes would be much more appropriate.
Xavier's dominance hides some serious roster mismanagement that I'm worried will come back to bite us badly next year.
Probably our ugliest offensive performance of the year (give a lot of credit to UIC), but it was nice to see us display the toughness to pull out the win.
Also, you realize Brown couldn't' get a shot because they had one of their best defenders glued to his hip all night right? Take Brown out of the game, and that defender is now free to help on X and everyone else. Brown being on the floor stretches out their defense and makes everyone else better. Thats what 3 point shooters do for you.

The player has to agree to a redshirt. But the player does not decide if he gets playing time. Which scenario makes more sense?
A. Player misses first 11 games of season. He is not a part of the regular rotation and he does not enter any ballgames. Towards the end of the season, the player realizes it's in his best interest to take a redshirt because he isn't playing anyway.
B. Player misses first 11 games of season. He plays garbage minutes in a couple blowout games. He uses up a year of eligibility without making any meaningful in-game contributions.
If Sharp is going to get important minutes this year, then it makes sense that he entered the game the other night. But so far, and with the depth we have, it doesn't appear that he's going to be in the rotation. None of this would really bother me much if it weren't for the fact that Hornecker's redshirt was 100% botched last year too.
As for Trent, like I said, I like him as a contributor on this team. But with our current roster, are you truly justifying him playing 40 minutes per game?
I’d like to know who else realistically we could play at the 2 for more than a couple minutes that would be asset.

Half the roster.

I’d love to see some Ferguson at the 2 and Davis at the 3 as the year goes on. Stulic will need some more minutes too if he’s going to get going again.
SIU had some of the best ball movement on offense that I’ve seen from this team for about two series and then they shut it down and went back to X going one on five. I don’t understand it. The ability is there but the execution isn’t.
You have to give some credit to UIC's defense as they are ranked in the top 10 in the country not to mention one of their assistant coaches new all the sets as he coached at Southern last year so a little freelance was warranted or would you rather they lost and until some team proves they can stop X just roll with it
@cowboydawg Based on what Trent Brown does in the SIU system, here are the things that have to be replaced when he is on the bench: Offensively, run to the corner and look for a catch/shoot 3. You have no ball-handling responsibility vs. pressure. You do not need to penetrate off the dribble and create. When TB drives he cannot score and defenders do not help off their men. Defensively, you do not have to guard penetrating, attacking point/lead guards. If your man attacks and scores through you, no problem, you stay in the game. I would say that any of the following could do that and MORE: Davis, Ferguson, Miller, Sharp, Stulic, McGee. I understand that TB is a wonderful person, student, and has important intangibles. It is a shame more players do not receive opportunities at that position. Unfortunately, that will not change.
I know how the game works. Obviously we have a coach that has no idea how to coach. 😉
What is Trent Brown’s made 3 pointers average for this season? Why do Rodney Watson, Mike Trude et al constantly praise his in the ball defense? One game does not a season make.

I have my problems with Trent getting so many minutes if he's not producing but I thought his defense was pretty noticeable on Saturday.
Trent needs to be playing. But he does not need 40 minutes per game while Ebube gets 2.
