Stole Indiana State's guy!
I don't think I've heard a broadcast of his, but he seemed well-liked, and I know he's active on social media. Seems like an enthusiastic, high-energy guy.

Reaction from a Sycamore fan:
"NNNNOOOOO! Great for Luke as I'm assuming he is getting a raise and maybe closer to his ultimate goal. he truly is one of the best out there. Guy has put out A+ content for the last 6 years and his reach for what he has done for sycamore athletics goes a lot farther than what is job title was. I was worried this day would come as he has the talent to go anywhere he wants but part of me was hoping he would be a Sycamore "lifer". Big loss for our athletic department."
This sounds like a great hire by SIU.
We won't know for sure, but it would certainly be interesting to see who else applied for that job. I think there were rumors that Eisenstein had applied who was my personal first choice. I know you can't always guarantee it will be a Saluki grad or someone with Saluki ties, but with the Radio and Television department pumping out top tier announcers, that was always my hope.
Having said all that, I've heard Martin call a few games and he does a good job. I look forward to seeing what he brings to the table beyond the PBP duties. Welcome aboard.

Russ Eisenstein did apply/interview for the job. They had a pretty strong pool of candidates and obviously deemed Luke Martin the best fit for the role, which will have many similarities but also some differences from how Mike Reis did the job. Sounds like there will be more emphasis on video/social media content aside from the game broadcasts.
Martin is very well-regarded around the league and seems like a great hire. I know Reis thinks very highly of him, which I'm sure carried some weight.

Well that's unfortunate to hear about Eisenstein getting passed over. I know he bleeds maroon. Obviously, I think the powers that be made the decision they thought best for the job.
Like I said, I appreciate Martin's ability to call a game and I'm sure he'll do a great job, but if given the opportunity, I liked the idea of having someone with ties to the university...hoping for longevity from the position and having those connections/ties to the university makes that more likely IMHO (Reis longevity is likely not going to happen again).
Eisenstein will be fine. He has a good gig at Ohio and Athens is a really nice place to live. He was my top option but I’m okay going outside the box with this.
I hope this guy do a a podcast like Jeff Bidwell does at Murray. I’ve wanted that to come from someone at the University for a long time.
Welcome to the SIU family, Luke Martin.
I like the hire. Having a guy with no Saluki ties could be a good thing.
Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.
They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.

Absolutely don't see how that could be a good thing. Reis was perfect .. and a Saluki fan. Gonna miss Mike!
Martin sounds good on his reels and seems like a popular and enthusiastic guy, but I will absolutely reserve judgement until I hear him doing Saluki games. I don't like Learfield having a thing to do with it honestly.
I thought Eric Sean from SEMO would be great - have no idea if he was even interested.

Reis said of the 6 candidates interviewed only one was an SIU grad. Eisenstein interviewed so if he did apply he didn’t get an interview. Really curious who got interviewed. To your point, he may not have wanted it.
I said this earlier, but I was also hoping someone with SIU ties got the job. Obviously not the only qualification, but SIU Radio and TV has been pumping out top talent for awhile so not impossible to get both a talented pbp guy and SIU ties.
Overall still happy with the hire. I think we got 1 of 2 😀
@siu_2011 Martin sounds good on his reels. I'm sure he'll do fine,
but my top choices were Erik Sean and Bob Odenkirk!!
Bob's on strike now, so he's basically out of work and I heard SAG pres. Fran Drecsher's voice was driving him crazy!. 😀
