Do the Pirates retaliate on Rizzo tonight?
I was surprised they didn't yesterday.
I think they do, unless the ump crew nips it early with a warning to both sides before the game.
I doubt Riz was looking to hurt the kid, but if you follow the letter of the law, that slide should have resulted in a DP. I don't like the new rules, but as long as they're there, you've got to follow them.

JD brought up a good point during the broadcast...if that were Rizzo going into 2nd to break up a double play, would it have had the same reaction? I doubt it would. My Cubs bias aside, I think Diaz sold it a bit (he looked around after the contact looking for the ump) and he finished the game. There was a series of photos published in the Trib that showed the sequence of the slide and you see Rizz basically going in with his legs tucked in, low, and just got a piece of Diaz's ankle. Not a dirty slide by any means. I'm sure we've all seen a lot of plays where guys go in spikes up and do more damage.
The Pirates must've thought it wasn't bad as they didn't retaliate on Rizz last night (he got hit late in the game but barely, and by a guy who was struggling with control). My guess is if they are going to get back, it will be a hard slide on a DP on one of the middle infielders.
I watched it several times from a couple of angles, If Diaz had stepped toward first where he threw the ball, instead of second, Rizzo would have been nowhere near him. Poor catcher play.

As I was saying.... https://www.mlb.com/news/cubs-pirates-clear-benches-after-hard-slide/c-279047034
It was stupid for the benches to clear and the bullpens to empty. Baez and Musgrove were just talking and seemed to have it settled before the rukus started. Again, not a bad slide...Musgrove didn't go in spikes high and looking to take out a knee. Just a player trying to break up a double play.
Jason Heyward batting 2nd....just let that sink in for a minute.
8 for his last 13. Whichever Jason Heyward this is...let's hope he doesn't wake up.

Sigh...sorry for jinxing it.

Lester has been very good.
Lester has been very good.
Gotta love a 4 game sweep on the road! Just the game the Cubs needed after running through the bullpen the night before.
With Milwaukee and St.L on the next road trip, this would be a good time to hit their stride and start doing some damage in the division.
Jason. F'in. Heyward.
.139 BA vs. Lefties this season
Stats...yeah they tell the whole story.

5 years ago, Almora's out. I know the intent of the rule is to protect defenseless catchers but this time it worked against them. Blocking the plate is a great baseball play.

It is what everyone was taught. It's instinctual. So it may be a while before we stop seeing guys block the plate.
On a related note, after last nights game, Doug Glanville suggested catchers start behind home plate on a throw in, and as the ball nears the plate the catcher runs up to catch it in front of the plate, giving him cover on the requirement that the catcher is allowed to block the path of a runner if the throw takes him into him. Something to think about anyway.
