Last night's implosion by the bullpen after another strong outing by Darvish is just putting nails in Maddon's coffin. Unless this team goes on a run and brings home another trophy in October, Theo's going to be interviewing candidates.
When the Cubs weren't hitting last year, they fired Chili Davis the hitting coach. With the bullpen woes, does Hottovy the pitching coach take the fall? Strop? Bye Felicia. Some glimmers of hope with the young arms in the 'pen but I just don't see this team having enough to get past teams like the Dodgers or Astros right now.

Cubs back in first... for now.
What a joke. Offense falls flat when it's needed most and a pitching staff that forgot how to pitch... Can't wait to see them restructure.
Must do's:
Trade: Almora, Russell, Happ, Bote, Quintana,
Resign: Zobrist, Castellanos
Let go: Hamels, Kintzler, Cichek, Strop, Morrow, Phelps, Descalso, Lucroy

Not a surprise but still...

He'll be working somewhere next year. Padres? Giants? Mets? Phillies?
Thanks for getting us to the mountain top Joe. You're a legend in Chicago forever.
Look for Bryant to be on the trade block this off-season. The Cubs desperately need to rebuild their pitching staff and Bryant will likely fetch some talent.

If the Cubs decide to sign Castellanos, then Schwarber is expendable too. Those power numbers could bring a nice return of at least a top of the rotation arm.
How do you Cubs fans feel about David Ross? Asking as a Cardinals fan. Surprised to see it not mentioned here.

Would have liked to hire someone with experience from outside the organization. The team really needs to move on from 2016. That being said, it all comes down to the roster moves they make. If they bring back the same team, they're gonna get the same results.
I am more concerned with the coaching changes needed. Or maybe it's the sabermetric philosophy of always trying to pull the ball and going for the fences on every pitch, limiting pitchers to 100 pitches (30-40 being called balls), and terrible baserunning decisions.

It'll be interesting to see how Ross fills out his staff. I read on the Athletic that Iopace and Hottovy are likely to stay but the rest is still tbd. Definitely need to clean up some fundamentals. Ross has said all the right stuff in the press conference about holding players accountable, playing the right way, etc. We'll see how that translates on to the field.
Maddon hired former Cubs hitting coach John Mallee for his staff in Anaheim which pretty much convinces me that Chili Davis was not his idea.
No surprise
Never really came back to his 2016 form after the abuse situation. Hope he gets his life straightened out and goes on to a productive career.
