We are broke, they should focus on operating the physical plant as cheaply as possible.

Being broke is often--usually, even--a barrier to making efficient economic choices. For example, those people who live in crappy hotel rooms usually aren't there because they think it's a smart economic move; they're there because they can't come up with the first and last month rent plus deposit that is required by most landlords.

Same deal here.

I think it'd be a bad move to pay extra to switch to gas unless we were flush with cash.  If someone could make a 5 to 10 year payback case, then that would be another matter I could support.

You guys realize the students have 0% authority to make such a change, let alone mandate it right?

Yes.

Doesn’t mean a change that will be a long time on implementing shouldn’t be discussed, the administration has to see where the future is going with energy. No one is saying this would be done quickly. We’re likely talking a very long process and traansition.

If there is a short payback cost savings involved, then switching to Natural Gas might be justified.  The student government needs to be pushing for proper operation of the campus not getting involved with feel good politics.  The only focus of student government and SIU management should be fixing the university to avoid closure.  When they've got that figured out then they can look into other things.
