You may’ve seen the news that SIU recently achieved R1 status. I’m a little surprised they didn’t get this classification back in the 2000s.
With its new designation under Carnegie’s revised criteria, SIU Carbondale is one of just six R1 universities in the state of Illinois, on the same level as Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern, University of Chicago, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and U of I Chicago.
That's great news and certainly should help efforts to boost enrollment.
The problem is that a lot of that money goes towards administrative expenses. I would love to see how much goes for travel, meetings and miscellaneous. These costs are estimated at 31% or more. I see where the federal government is trying to limit this to 15%.

Hopefully Trump and his asinine policies don’t end up nullifying any benefits that would normally come SIU’s way as a result of this achievement.
