Big student population from Chester goes to SEMO, no closer than SIU. What's up with that?

I think I just figured out why enrollment is so high.

This isn’t a good sign. Doesn’t it seem like we can never keep someone in that position long-term?When you need people to sign up here versus out of state colleges that are cheaper even considering out of state tuition, it's a crummy job. This Carnegie research thing is an albatross needing cut loose, cut overhead back to 90s levels, cut tuition, and watch enrollment increase.
do you just make stuff up to try to hurt SIU, Morris?
i have a tuition bill right here in front of me. one year tuition for my kid is $7,710.
if i would have sent them to murray - $25,000 for one year tuition.
semo - $13,000 tuition for one year.
indiana state - $20,160
eastern illinois - $9,100
get your facts straight before posting your out of touch theories.
the next time an SIU administration job opens up you should take it since you have all the answers.

Are you including fees? On paper, SIU's tuition looks pretty cheap until you realize it's only about half the bill. I graduated from SIU 4 years ago, and I was thinking that each semester cost me about $6,000 each.
I always like to see the discussion about the enrollment. Of course it was higher when we all went there, I am just curious to see what it does this year. After last years 'better' year, I have not seen nor heard of anything that's new or innovative from the SIU admissions offices. But, lets have some optimism and see what the numbers show, especially with retention.
I live in the northern suburbs of Chicago and SIU never had a presence at my kid's high school. I hope that thought of not having a solid presence in Chicagoland has changed.
I would love to see them turn the tide, but with Carbondale having so many issues and the economics of the region, I think SIUC's best days are behind it.
Now, it could be recreated into a smaller more academically focused school, but the administration there doesn't appear to understand that approach.
I love Carbondale and SIU but not sure I'd feel the same if I went in 2021. Carbondale really has to figure it out. So many closed businesses over the past few years that made the place special. There's like 3 or 4 main bars within walking distance for students now. Just a decade ago there were at least 10.
Sure you would, unless you're an alcoholic only interested in how many bars are close to campus! LOL!
P.S.: You Can get a degree in Fermentation Science now!
Campus has never looked better - one of the prettiest if not the prettiest in this state, in the most scenic part of the state, lots of good degree programs, Touch of Nature ramping up the mountain biking thing, kayakers all over Cedar Lake every Saturday, etc. etc.
Carbondale has never looked better, about to build a new transportation center downtown, beautification going on, blah, blah. Certainly looks better than it did in the 70s. Doesn't look like a soulless Chicago suburb with all brand new brick...and that's a good thing in my opinion. Yes some businesses are gone - is that a surprise during a pandemic? New businesses popping up. Scooter's Coffee near Subway on West Main near Murdale, Smoothie King and T-Mobile in the lot next to Qin Guan Restaurant near the mall. The mall is not doing great - is there a mall in America that is? Bake Me Happy Food Co. moving into the former Emma and Arnie's Sandwiches location on S. Illinois. New Mexican place in the old Mississippi Flyway. The old Ramada Inn on W. 13 has been turned into apartments, etc. etc.
I Do miss the small, overpriced subs at Boobys! 😀
Beautiful campus, good programs, D1 sports, Quatros, Primos (good cheap pizza..love that extra large carryout for $10), humidity, armadillo hunting in your spare time. Awesome place if you're a nature lover or a biker or mountain biker. Lots to love! We just need some good salesmen selling this place.
Other evening went by an off-campus house - bunch of collegians in the front yard drinking - had created a giant slip n slide in the side yard - big sign that says U Honk, We Drink! I honked!! They drank!! LOL
We may never be 25,000 again and that's fine. Aren't near as many 18 year olds around as there were 20 years ago. We will survive.
(What we DON'T need is a freshman getting murdered off-campus by some scumbags!!! 😥)
Our enrollment was flat (lower by 100 students). I’ll take that over what we’ve been seeing. The growing size of incoming classes is a good indicator for the future.

It would seem that the key now is retention.
Our retention rate was 75% - that's excellent. I'm disappointed that the incoming class isn't bigger, because applications were way up I believe.
Three years of POS Dunn's buddy Brad Colville with no enrollment manager and no-budget Bruce Rauner were an absolute disaster. Lost thousands of students.
Despite the good news about the freshman class, the reality is that ISU still enrolled almost 2000 more freshman.
