Let's hope so.

One thing working against all universities is fewer graduates coming out of high school. So more schools competing for fewer students. Not to mention schools with tougher entrance standards can/will lower them, however slightly. It's simple demographics, so SIU has to work harder.

March on triumphantly!

SIU has new programs, that should help enrollment next year, and 2 years down the road (to me the announcements were late to make a big effect this year, needed announced in January when seniors are deciding their direction)

I’m skeptical because of recent history, but SIU really needs flat or increased enrollment this year.  It seems they are trending in the right direction, especially with a real budget from the state and Carbondale pushing to improve its image.  Renovating Communications should provide a boost considering there has been a big drop in MCMA students the last few years.  If SIU was marketed correctly they could really improve enrollment.  SIU is in the most beautiful part of the state, is still cheap, and has some great programs.

I've wondered why H.S. student could develop. produce, and direct TV programs (and sports) on local cable, but I see nothing like this from SIU.

With the level of support from ESPN3, I could see several "broadcast" television degrees or certifications being made in live sports, an area that having skilled people will always be needed even with everyone having a cell phone.

College recruiters aggressively go after out-of-state students

SIU needs to put more resources into recruiting. U. of Alabama has 40 regional recruiters!

I've got another source today that puts fall enrollment at 10,000. Guess I'll just wait for official numbers.

SIU needs a lot of things, a good recruiting catalog package for all the high school guidance counselors within 500 miles of Carbondale would be a big start. Then also mail them out to every highschool junior with a B average. (each SIU school gets a page to tout their top degree programs)

"Instate tuition, 7 hour drive from Chicago, awesome golf courses."

A video highlighting the cooler stuff that makes SIU different, Touch of nature climbing, veterinary medicine, dentistry, nursing, Student teaching, electrical engineering, automotive technology, operating a camera at a sporting event, working the up-link trailer at an event, kids washing a plane, not just people sitting in a lab with white coats looking at beakers. (the video they show during nationally televised sporting events and through the holidays.)

Heard from reliable source that total enrollment is 9000. Freshman class bigger but total enrollment lower. We shall see.

Fall 2018 number was published as  12,817 students. If the 9,000 number holds that would be a ~30% drop.

I have heard that the freshman class size will be very similar to last years if not smaller.

If we’re talking just about undergraduate, SIU has fallen below SEMO and about the same as Murray. Looks like we may now be the smallest public university in the Valley. Sad

I've heard some pretty bad things about enrollment. Around 6500 full time undergrad, with total full time enrollment a little under 9,000.

Decisions need to be made on our future.  Put aside the concerns of the faculty/administrators (employment concerns) and determine what our future needs to be.  I would start with determining a proper distribution of funds between SIU and e, then start looking at org charts from the 90s versus 21st century and start getting the total employee numbers back down to what they were when we had 20k students.  All of those "extra" people on the payroll are a significant portion of the problem.

Does anyone know what the breakdown is for this year on actual good majors, sjw majors, and creampuff (communications, psycology, etc.) majors is?  This would be a good indicator of how much further the enrollment will drop in the near future.
