Avila fits into what Indiana State does a lot better than what SIU runs. Indiana State likes to run and gun which plays to Avila's strengths. Don't think he'd be close to the same player here, thus why he decided not to come here or why we passed on him.
I think Avila would be a good player, and better than Cade, on ANY team (this is more of a compliment to Avila than knock on Cade btw). I'd be willing to bet that if he were on this roster, this season, he would easily outscore, out rebound, out perform Cade, even if that is a direct result of him getting more deserved playing time. As this is a moot conversation though, I'll stop here.
I respect your reply and surely it has a lot of valid points. I stand by my observations at this time though. One of the main reasons is, if you're a 7' and did not dominate on the defensive side of the ball, that is a problem. HE often looked out of place and unsure of himself and slow to react. Did he have some good plays, of course he did, but regardless of time on the floor, a 7' should be a real and consistent force. As far as giving up on him, I have not. I think he could be a valuable piece, heck he can he a very valuable piece. I am only 'guessing' at this point that he will not be the stud we hoped for and, in fact, play more of a minor role. Here's hoping I'm wrong (again) !!
I also am not giving up on Cade. Big guys generally need more time to grow into their bodies, get used to D1 strength and conditioning, etc., to have success, and this is only the beginning of his second year on campus.
He does face some challenges in getting on the floor again this year, though, in that Rupert and Ebube have more game experience and/or DI-ready bodies, and then you add in Hensley, who at 6-8 could see some time at the 5 when Mullins wants smaller/more nimble lineups (which he generally has favored ... will that change with a bigger roster this year? TBD). Footspeed, as mentioned earlier in the thread, is an open question with Cade, and then what does his health status look like in the preseason?
I do think Cade has a promising stroke for a big guy. This team needs scorers to develop, so if he can emerge as a legit weapon offensively, that could be his path to break through somewhat of a logjam with the bigs. Otherwise, we'll see what kind of patience he has if he doesn't play much for his first two years.
Here is a novel thought sometimes when you get limited minutes and limited games maybe just maybe you are a little nervous maybe cautious of making a mistake or thinking to much so you don't make a mistake which could affect your play as you are not fluid as you would be if you were getting consistent minutes which would allow more confidence and the ability to react and not think about in other words be more natural

So true.
In my experience, there's no question that not getting enough time on the floor to get into a flow or to play "relaxed" prevents you from playing up to your normal level.
Putting a guy in for 2 minutes is usually a waste of time (unless you just want a body out there while you talk to your main starter on the bench before you put him back in). I think this is especially true for inexperienced players. I thought BM often played musical chairs with his bigs last year, jerking them out after too brief a stint on the floor. In SE's case, that was just conditioning issues.
Also some players just play better in the games than they do in practice and vice versa. I don't know why but that's been my experience.
