U...G...L...Y game at Loyola today. Lost 51-49. Kinda reminded me of our loss at ISUr last season. Nelson with 15, but she scored 10 of those in the last three or so minutes.
Silvey was shut down, only 2pts. Had several chances in the last mi.nute to win it but came up empty.
Tough home stand coming up next weekend. UNI and Drake. Would like to see more than 400 buts in seats for those.
Sorry I'm so late following up to this thread...
The ending of the Loyola game (say the last two minutes)...I watched twice on the ESPN3 replay.
I wonder if some basketball geeks who have some familiarity with women's basketball in general and SIU women's basketball in particular could find time to dial up that game and watch its conclusion.
I have a specific criticism of SIU's play/coaching late in this game...and I wonder if others might agree with me.
The game can be found here, I think (cable/satellite subscription required):

(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."

After going back and watching the last four to five minutes again, there were some issues. We were up three and coughed that up. We let there top player roll over us with fouls to give. Inside the last 30 seconds were pretty sloppy. Nelson should have gone to the hole on that steal and break out instead of letting up and running clock. She would have been fouled, and she's good FT shooter. The inbounds play at the end was run poorly; maybe designed poorly too? Instead of trying to get it back to the inbounder (Nelson again) Brockmeyer should have taken the shot. She's got range and a good shot.
Looking back at our losses we have had three close losses. If I remember the Ooooie-Pooie two point loss was mismanaged at the end by players and coaches. The four point Memphis loss was a product of us being down 21 at halftime - so I won't pick on that. The SEMO loss we were up six after the first and they outscored us 18-5 over the last five minutes after the game. SEMO out rebounded us big, like 50- 28 or whatever. So that's a player thing to me.
I don't know who point a finger at here. It could go both ways, but at times, I see this team go lazy for stretches. The Murray game we were cruising let them chop our nearly twenty point lead down under ten late. Thier top player was impressive - she dropped 31 on us, and it wasn't in spurts - it was all game.
I'll be there for both games this weekend. I'd like to see some encouragement from our Athletic Department to get butts in seats for these women. (Some media presence would help too.) It doesn't seem like there's much support from them.

I haven't watched the women yet this season, but I'm encouraged by what I read and hear. If SIU can keep winning and get to a place where we consistently make runs at the post season, there will be more butts in seats.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to quite possibly the worst officiating crew I've ever witnessed to the Banterra Center for tonight's game. These idiots shouldn't be allowed to ref a 5th grade game.
17-9 UNI after 1.

I miss the days of standing room at Davies.
Dawgs warming up. Game tied.
Craving a McBride Special!
Halftime of the Three Blind Mice Tour... 35-33 Dawgs.

And another bad shooting night. 60-57 Purple Kitties.
With Drake and Missouri State up next, our promising Valley season could start 1-4.

UNI is good, but we had to win this one at home after that terrible loss at Loyola.

We missed A LOT of easy buckets. And our star player has gone 5 for her last 28? Something is up with Nicole Martin too. It looked at one point Stein sat her she only played 23 minutes but had 11 boards.
Now we get a pissed off Drake team Sunday after they coughed up a late lead at Mizz State.

Tough loss to The Drake 73-65. We hung with them and had several leads until we went cold with about 2 and half minutes left in the 3rd.
Even though Drake had 27 turnovers they were a much more disciplined team on offense. Lots of backdoor cuts and open lanes to the basket. I find it interesting that Hitner and Rhine (thier two top players over the last 17 or so years, it seems) get thier points playing less than 25 minutes a game.
Martin (19pts) and Silvey (13 pts) looked somewhat normal again. Brockmeyer had two quick fouls early, but it didn't matter that much as we had a 4 point lead at the half. I don't understand why we don't go to the hole more - Nelson and Patrick move well and Silvey can drive well. But we just don't. Our bench is much more improved over last year. McCallister is gaining confidence. Link is a good ball handler but can improve. Our two post transfers, Walker and Keita have had an impact.
Oh well - #20 Missouri State in next. They should be inside the Top 20 after beating Drake and UNI this weekend. Unless a minor miracle occurs, we're 1-4 after Friday night. That Loyola loss is gonna loom large later on. Not the Valley start I envisioned.

Great post.
Thanks.
#5 for Drake is as advertised--here's how I put it.
If #5 was a Saluki, and traded uniforms with ANY Saluki, SIU would've won the game.
She's that good.

I am a MVC fan from another school. My observation is that SIU has one of the most talented teams in the MVC. But right before the conference season I picked them as 7. Not because they have the 7th best talent but because IMO they have the worst coach in the MVC outside the Ind. schools. She consistently takes talented teams and under achieves. She recruits well enough but finds a way to lose games that should be won. I and many others I know were surprised she returned as coach this year. Having said that I think that this year SIU certainly is capable of beating all or realistically right now all but one of the MVC teams. I would go a little farther than one observed on this Board. If right before the game SIU traded coaches only with Drake I think SIU would probably win. Hittner (5) is a great player but I would take Rhine(50) over her if given the choice. They are widely regarded as the 2 best players in the MVC this year but IMO Petree from Bradley and Franklin from Missouri State, both sophomores are two players I would take in a second over the two Drake players, because they play both ends of the court exceptionally well.
You choose 50 over 5?
5, a returning senior, is the two-time Valley POY!
I'd like to coach against you...
And the SIU Drake game was decided in the fourth quarter, at the same time that 5 took over the game.
You're right: 50 is very good.
But 5 is special.

I understand your point, and agree with you about Hittner being special. Are you aware that Rhine has more career points than Hittner, has been all conference 3 seasons and is on the watch list for the nation's best power forward. In most of Drake's games against top notch opponents that I have watched the last 3 years Rhine has had a better game than Hittner. Hittner tends to have great games but also bad games, and she seems to get flustered more easily than Rhine. Rhine tends to play well against great teams. Hittner does not. Did you see Drake's game against South Dakota a top 25 team earlier this year? Rhine was dominant. Hittner was terrible. Hittner did not score a field goal against Mo State until the 2nd half. So I am not taking anything away from Hittner or her game Sunday but my point of view is not as crazy as you seem to think. Go to Drake's website and check the stats both for this season and their careers for yourself. Rhine is special too and I like her consistency. So please familiarize yourself Rhine's stats and credentials before you bash my opinion too much. Check out the field goal % for the year (Rhine 67%, Hittner 41%, also Rhine higher 3 pt fg%, more rebounds, higher scoring average) Box scores against Mo State, South Dakota, Mizzou in last years NCAA are readily available online for your study. What a great problem Drake has though to even be able to have a discussion about which player is their best player. Hittner is really starting to play better Earlier in the year she struggled. Rhine has been consistent all year Another minor detail you may not be aware of is that Rhine is 4th in points scored (Hittner 9th) among the 4500+ women currently playing NCAA Division 1 basketball and yet somehow Rhine is not a special player. Let that sink in 4th among over 4500 active players and you act like she is just some average D1 player that anyone would be stupid to take over Hittner. Thank you for the opportunity to educate you with some facts. The MVC is vastly improved. So much so that there are two sophomores now in the MVC that I think I would pick for my team over Rhine and Hittner because they can flat out play on both ends of the floor. One plays for Mo. State and one plays for Bradley. One helped take her team to the Sweet 16 last year and one may outscore Rhine before her career is over. A great time to be a MVC fan.
Hittner (5) and Rhine (50) are both tough. Hittner is more of the focus in their play. But Rhine can be just as dangerous. I've looked at box scores of theirs and have see where they both score in the 20's. But Ive also seen where they do what they did the other night where one or the other lights it up. They're both outstanding players and can't wait for them to be gone. I said it before - it's kind of amazing that they get their points (2nd and 3rd in scoring in the league) with both averaging only 25 minutes a game.
Silvey is around 32 minutes a game.
And highest league scorer - Petree of Bradley is averaging 31-32 minutes a game.
