After going back and watching the replay - Gabby didn't totally deserve what she got. The first tech was a bit borderline, but I probably would have given that to her. She got tangled up and was a bit too aggressive getting away from the UNI player and gave her a bit of a forearm shiver to the head. The UNI player did a good job of selling it.
The second one where she fouled out and got the T after the foul was questionable. Unless she said something directly to the ref, which it just looked like she was muttering to herself, she didn't deserve that one. I think the ref just gave her that one because she felt like it. Gabby knew she fouled and fouled out and she just went straight to the bench. Ref didn't like the attitude and rung her up. Thats just pettiness on the ref's part.
Oh well, water under the bridge. We won and that's all that matters. UNI is a game back in the loss column and that's also all that matters.
Drake on Sunday. Preview to follow...

@rabidsaluki I am a MVC fan from another team (not UNI). I watched both plays you are talking about. The forearm call was an obvious call you have to call if you are going to have the rule on the books. The technical foul call was made by the official close to Gabby. Why would you assume the official was being petty? Gabby was not talking quietly you can tell by her lip movement. She was not given the T until she clearly said something. Even if she said BS or something like that that is deserving of a T. I realize you are a rabid fan but I am surprised that you would question the official given how Gabby not in a happy mood said something right in front of her and that is precisely when she was given the T.. That is a T all day, every day. That is not a situation in which an official wants to give a T. It appears to me Gabby gave her very little choice and anybody with any objectivity would agree.
Congratulation on the fine year SIU is having. If SIU wins tomorrow they are clearly in a good position to win the MVC title. Now Moline will be a dogfight. More likely than not the MVC will only get one team in the Big Dance. Would not want to bet against MSU if an NCAA berth is on the line but neither would I want to bet against SIU or UNI. Any of the top 8 teams are capable of winning against each other on a given night.
SIU vs Drake 2pm, Sunday 2/13 at Banterra Center (Magic 95.1 & ESPN+)
Series History:
Last time out in Des Moines we broke a 12 game losing streak to the Bulldogs via a 60-49 win.
Overview Of Drake:
The Bulldogs started out the year 8-3, but have gone 4-8 in conference. They only have one road win in conference and two overall wins in true road games all season. They have played teams pretty tight recently including a 63-59 loss at Missouri State on Friday.
Current Valley Standings/NET rankings as of 2/12
1) Illinois State 11-2 (15-9) / 120 NET
2) SIU 9-2 (14-7)/ 75 NET
(Odd that we didn’t get a bump up in the NET after the UNI win. But UNI fell two spots. The NCAA’s computer must have had a brain fart. 😉 😆 )
3) UNI 9-3 (16-7) / 51 NET
4) Missouri State 8-3 (17-5) / 43 NET
5) Valpo 6-7 (8-16)/ 243 NET
6) Indiana State 5-6 (10-12) / 187 NET
7) Loyola 5-7 (13-10) /123 NET
8) Drake 4-8 (12-11) / 93 NET
9) Evansville 2-10 (8-15) / 284 NET
10) Bradley 1-12 (4-18) / 271 NET
Drake Probable Starters:
Maggie Bair – 6-3 junior forward 12.6ppg 6 rebounds/gm
Grace Berg – 6-0 junior forward 11.3ppg 3.7 rebounds/gm
Maddie Petterson 5-8 GS guard 7.3ppg 2.5 assists/gm
Kate Dinnebier 5-8 freshman guard 8.6ppg
Megan Meyer 5-8 junior guard 11.5ppg
Drake has not been playing well. They rank in the bottom half of almost all defensive categories. The Bulldogs cough up the ball at a rate of 19 turnovers a game. The last time we played them Maggie Bair had 18, but no other player had more than seven. They spread their minutes around. The key for them is to get off to a hot start as they have outscored their opponents by 86 points in the first quarter.
How We’re Doing:
Every game from here on out is a big game. This game kinda feels like a trap game. This has the same feel as the ISU Red/Bradley home weekend a few weeks back. The Bulldogs are definitely down this year as they are pretty much locked into a Thursday game at The Valley tournament. But they just played MSU tight in a loss in Springfield. Our win against UNI was big, but it sounds like we are a bit drained. This will be our fifth game in ten days. I’m sure that a couple of light days Monday and Tuesday will do us some good. Still seeing some good minutes, good offensive and most importantly, great defense from our role players. AJ Katcher played good minutes in relief of Gabby Walker and had an important score and a timely block coming in cold in the fourth quarter not having played all game. Freshman Laniah Randle and Tyranny Brown are both playing big right now. Nice to see we weathered not having Mak for the last eight minutes of the first half. Q Love, in my opinion, is the best on ball defender in the league and one of the better ball handlers. If she continues to give us 6-8 points a night as well, it makes us that much better.
GO DAWGS!!

@mvcladyhoopsfan Hey! What do you expect from commentary at 3 in the morning after a long day in the salt mines. LOL!
As a former high school ref - I would have given her the first one ten times out of ten. When you get tangled up like that you shouldn't force a high arm to the head.
The second one is the one I'm borderline on. Petty was not really the right word there? But it seems to me that refs are too "involved" in games now a days. That was a judgement call and I think it was wrong. Walker didn't look at an opposing player or a ref there when she turned and headed for the bench. If she said something to herself, which it appears that she did, I would have warned her and walked her to the sideline to see if she would have gone further. If she had screamed something out loud without looking at anyone, I would have T'ed her up. Neither one of us were on the floor so we have to rely on watching it as it happened (I was there as it happened but quite aways away) or the replay.
Back when I was officiating HS games (over twenty years ago) you couldn't even say "Oh, darn! That was unfortunate," without getting rung up. But, I have heard some stories about what goes on out on the court these days and its quite mind-boggling what they get away with.
I would have T'ed up Coach Warren at the end of the third for what she did. She came sprinting onto the court during a live ball situation (the timekeeper screwed up there as well, not stopping the clock after the made basket) berated the base line ref (the same one who ran Walker) then went to another who she nearly made contact with and was almost poking him in the face. A UNI player fell after a made basket (could have had a foul there, maybe not) Walker stepped over her and I think that's what set Coach Warren off.
But, that's just an opinion. What do I know - I wasn't on the floor.

Profanity, disrespectfully addressng an official, overt action that shows resentment to the call all justify a technical. Given Gabby's demeanor when she said something out loud it sure looked like the latter would apply even if no profanity or addressing official occurred (we don't know). As a former official myself.I would also say that Gabby would have been on a short leash given her conduct at other points in the game. Discretion of officials vary for sure. I agree on Coach Warren T. Good sportsmanship is stated as a core value of the NCAA on page 1 of rulebook. As a MVC fan and observer it is notable and unfortunate that the sportsmanship of Gabby and Abby has not been what one would expect from them this yr. Hopefully Coach Stein will address this issue for their sake

The officiating in the UNI game was horrid for a championship level game.
Both teams deserved better
No problem with the flagrant but most of the game was poorly handled.
Drake has cut our once 13 point lead to two here early in the 3rd. 33-31 Southern. We look a little flat.
