Women’s NIT First Round

SIU at Purdue 6:00 pm CDT, Wednesday 3/16 at Mackey Arena (B1G+ streaming, subscription required. Watch party in the Cook Club at Banterra. Don’t know about radio on our end)

Series History:

We have a bit of history with Purdue – A ten game series that is tied at 5-5 that dates back to 1978. The last time we played them was eight years ago November in West Lafayette and we won 64-61 in a game that we led wire-to-wire after jumping out to a 20-10 lead after one, and a 38-26 halftime lead. In that game we were led by Carlie Corrigan’s 18 points, Lauren Hartman’s 16 boards and Rishonda Napier’s 8 assists.

Overview Of The Boilermakers:

The Boilermakers come into this game finishing their regular season at 16-14 and 7-11 in the Big 10 which was good for a two-way tie for ninth with Minnesota. They are 10-6 at home on the season and have lost three straight. As of Tuesday, Purdue was ranked 80 in the NET. We have two common opponents – They played Illinois State back in November and beat the Redbirds 76-64 at Redbird Arena, and of course, The Illini, whom they beat 89-67 in Champaign and 70-54 at home. Their last game was a loss to 8th place Michigan State, 73-69 in the Big 10 Tourney.

Purdue averages 69ppg (10th in the Big 10) and give up 67ppg (10th). They shoot at a .419 clip (9th) and allow opponents to shoot .417 (9th). They are 8th in three point shooting at 32.4% and are the best in the conference at three point defense at 27.6%, good for 37th nationally, but behind our 16th nationally ranked three point defense. Purdue is 12th in rebounding and 9th in rebounds allowed. They cough up the ball 15 times a game and force 15 turnovers a game. They are 8th in assist to turnover ratio and 3rd in blocked shots. Purdue is led by alum Katie Geralds in her first year, she won two NAIA National Championships at Marian.

Purdue’s leading scorers are Madison Layden and Abbey Ellis at 11.6 ppg ranking them 22nd in the league. Their leading rebounder is Jeanae Terry at 6.9 r/g (10th)

Warren Nolan.com has us as a -1 favorite with a 54% chance to win.

Probable Starters for Purdue:

#5 Cassidy Hardin 5-10 Sr Guard 8.9ppg

#10 Jeanae Terry 5-11 Jr Guard 7.2 ppg 6.9 rebounds/game

#23 Abbey Ellis 5-6 Jr Guard 11.6ppg 3 assists/game

#33 Madison Layden 6-1 So Guard 11.6ppg

#35 Ricky Woltman 6-4 Jr Forward 7.0ppg 5.3 rebounds/game 32 blocks

Looking at their box scores, they only run an eight player rotation. 5-7 guard Brooke Moore looks like their leading sub at 9.6ppg.

What's Up With Us:

Well – after the disappointing loss to ISURed in The Valley semifinals, this is it. Our defense was its usual self. We shot bad, in part to ISU Red’s defense, we were flustered at times, and our usual good in-game adjustments went flat. It happens. Bad day at the office at the worst time of the year. Now its win or go golfing. I’m hoping, if we win, we get a home game. But with our low average attendance – here’s to hoping. As I’ve said before – I’d rather be playing in the NIT than being a 14 seed cannon fodder (Which we were projected as) for a 3 seed team. Good luck Illinois State! 15 seed going up against 2 seed Iowa’s national leading scorer Catlin Clark, and their nation’s leading field goal percentage center (68%.)

I like this team. I’m going to miss this team. I really want to see us keep winning. Abby Brockmeyer said  with conviction after the ISU loss she was ready to go right now! Love it. Mak with the same conviction said we’ve got more basketball left in us. Love it! The Dawgs looked happy and relaxed at Tuesday’s send off.

Makenzie Silvey needs just 8 points to join the very exclusive 2000 point club at Southern, only two in there. She needs 21 to pass Kent Williams for second all-time.

GO DAWGS!!

Why did Mo State get a bid and over us? Strength of non-conference schedule?

Bears were 44 in NET, SIU was 76

Goes to show you that NET ranking is bull kaka! We lost to them there by 1 pt. We pounded them here by 16!

NET:  They beat a S. Cal team that shot 23%. They beat ranked Va Tech in P.R. (evidently Va Tech had one too many Coquitos the night before.)

Lost to the Redturds we whipped twice. Lost twice to UNI team we beat in C'dale.

Then we get an away game at Purdue even though we have a better NET ranking.  Nothing has changed. The F'ING NCAA committee still finds ways to screw the mid-majors!!!!!

I didn't understand that whole stretch of games where our NET barely moved. (MoSt here then the game at their place then the ISU Blue mid-week game then the UNI/Drake weekend.) Then we hammer ISU Red on the road? Its not as if we had a cupcake non-conference schedule. The IUPUI game that got cancelled would have been nice to play as that hovered around being a Q1 or Q2 game.

Granted the lower NET teams on our schedule were pretty low and that U Of I game did more damage than good.

NET was designed to help P5 teams. My understanding is that committee felt MSU rebounded well enough over 2nd half of MVC season after two ACLs ended two post starters season in non conference (very comparable to us losing Gabby and Abby) to be rewarded for their strong non conference SOS and record and good overall record.  A little bit of sympathy perhaps but understandable given good team recovery from losing two of MVCs better players.

I was going to the watch party, but now I can't. I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss this game so I signed up for the Big 10 Plus stream of this. It doesn't appear they have any login/device restrictions like Netflix et al.

If anyone wants to watch - shoot me a PM and I'll give my log in info. I'll check it up until 5:45.

*I will be cancelling it as soon as the game is over.

Losing Hipp and Franklin was huge blow to them. If they had them both, I'm positive that the complexion of the conference standings would have been much different.

Bit of a slow start. Nice announcers they recognized Silvey's countdown to 2000.

17-11 Purdue after one.

Unless a miracle happens our season is done. 60-37 Purdue after 3.

I just hope Mak can get one more bucket. She sits at 1,998 points.
