This is in really poor taste from Northwestern. Vokolek is getting a nice pay bump I'm sure, but unless he was angling for this job I don't put as much blame on him, most people would take that opportunity. NW shouldn't have been looking at coaches actively on staffs this late in the game in the first place.
This is why when coaches complain about players having the freedom to move or getting contacted by other programs, it falls on deaf ears. "They made a commitment to this team..." yeah get bent.
Hopefully all the concepts that Vokolek was putting in place, James is familiar with and ready to implement. Would be difficult to switch things up at this point.
James seems to be a decent fill-in. He held the title of Assistant Head Coach, and has a few years as a DC.

It's a business at the end of the day. So while the timing does suck, coaches leave programs for other programs at in opportune times all the time :).
According to NH, James had offers with a bump in salary but decided to stay at SIU. He's been playing or coaching defense his whole life and played in the Big Ten, so I think he'll do fine. D should be improved over last year.
PJ Jules was named to the Stats preseason All-American team.
South Dakota State had eight players on the preseason team, mostly on offense.
Jackrabbits have NFL type RBs, big OL, and a good size athletic QB that can make all throws and use his legs to keep plays alive.
