i work as a reporter for a newspaper in Tennessee. Three of the kids i cover were at the NDSU game on Saturday on an official visit.
i have donated a modest amount to SIU and have been a member of the alumni . association.
i just want to be careful here - could it be an NCAA violation for me to ask these SAs about their trip to Carbondale?

To be on the safe side, I would direct all questions to Liz’s office.
I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!
That's a good idea. i was just wondering if anyone here knew.

At one time, I could have quoted you most of the rules. But times change and so do the rules. I can't believe that anyone on this board would purposely mislead you, but they might do it by mistake. Better safe than sorry.

i understand that, but these are kids i know. i cover them. They are really talented and all-around good kids i talk to every other week during football season. Is talking to them about recruiting the same as messaging a kid i don't know on social media?
Just wanted to be sure i didn't cross any lines.
If you are a booster you can not talk to them about SIU. While a stupid rule it is still a rule

OK. Thank you!
i will have someone else talk to them about their recruitment.
Can you tell me what qualifies a person as a booster?
i have donated to the university - although very modestly - and have been a member of the alumni association.

If you are a contributor, you can count yourself as a booster.

OK. No problem. i can assign someone else to that story, then.
i know a guy who has stepped all over these rules on occasion.

So if I send $2 to every university, I cannot talk to anyone? sounds like a good plan.
