Does anyone have a list of Salukis that transferred out of the program after last season?  I thought someone mentioned that several players entered the portal.

I went through those lists and came up with this.

transfers From SIU:
RJ Orebo (DL) Southern Illinois to Houston Christian
Collin Heard (DB) Southern Illinois to Merrimack
Richie Hagarty (DL) Southern Illinois to Northwestern

Orebo didn't play at all. Heard played in three games. Hagerty played in 10 games and was the team sack leader with 6.5, 9th in tackles. Bush played in 11 games and was 4th in tackles. (hopefully he'll withdraw from the portal)

transfers To SIU:
Vinson Davis III (WR) Charleston Southern to Southern Illinois
Colin Bohanek (LB) Eastern Illinois to Southern Illinois
Jaelin Benefield (RB) Eastern Illinois to Southern Illinois
Tim Varga (DL) Eastern Illinois to Southern Illinois
Ubayd Steed (DB) Towson to Southern Illinois
Jordan Bingham (WR) Valparaiso to Southern Illinois

Noah Fenske (OL) Colorado to Southern Illinois
Zach Westmoreland (WR) Eastern Michigan to Southern Illinois
Jake Parrella (LB) Oregon State to Southern Illinois
Drake Johnson (DB) Texas State to Southern Illinois
Marcelo Mendiola (OL) Bowling Green to Southern Illinois

We've had a lot of transfers after the Spring Game, a lot of them are likely playing time issues caused by people being better than them up on the depth chart.  Clayton Bush is probably one of 2 or 3 big losses.

Thank you very kindly for posting this Mr. Woogers. It certainly seems that we have more transfers joining the program than leaving. I also am hopeful that Clayton Bush returns, he is a great talent in our secondary.

Bush will not be back. Monthly scholarship stipend and NIL money is too good for players like Bush to stick around. SIU is going to lose more of their top players again next year.
The monthly stipend for scholarship players at SIU 10 years ago to live off campus was $1000. 10 years later it’s still $1000. Players are encouraged to move off campus after freshmenseason. That’s pretty typical in most programs for freshman to get off campus or in some type of athletic team living facility. Most schools, unlike SIU, have a nutrition station or eatery where athletes can get the right foods all day for free. Protein shakes, sandwiches, water, gatorades, protein bars and a good meal for dinner after workouts or practices. SIU players are trying to live off $1000 with no nutrition station or table provided for them. After rent and bills players are trying to eat 3 or 4 meals a day on the leftover money. Basically $400 a month to survive on is impossible for athletes trying to eat the right foods to maximize potential.

Bush is stacking up offers left and right just days after hitting the portal. Not a chance he returns.

@valleyfb

Bush is a great athlete, I am disappointed he is leaving. I wish him well however.

Are you saying that every other MVFC school provides the things you listed? If so, what are they doing that SIU is not, and how can this problem be rectified in your opinion? Perhaps I'm ignorant to the situation, but I thought SIU athletes were treated well overall.

That's a bummer - good player we could use next year. Hopefully some of our new transfer DBs or returners can replace him. Ubayd Steed from Towson was the leading tackler in the Towson secondary and started all 11 games. 3 star recruit out of HS. We also picked up a db from Texas State, Drake Johnson. We have several returning like Jules, Brown, and Stephenson. PJ Jules has been great.

I think players are treated great. Problem is other programs of comparable size are treated much better. Players want the perks nowadays. SIU needs serious nutrition program where high quality food with supplements are available daily. SIU is one of the lowest paying programs for athletes monthly stipend. Here’s a comparison. SIU $1000 a month. Eastern Kentucky $1550 a month. The monthly stipend is an issue. Players are left with $400 a month to eat on and for any extra curricular activities after paying rent.

@valleyfb I hear you, but housing in Carbondale has to be one of the cheapest in the MVFC (maybe all of FCS?). That could be a reason why the stipend is smaller than most other schools offer.

Players are paying anywhere from $400 to $600 a month for rent.
Several players live in Aspen apartments. Not as cheap as you would think.

Northwestern Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald has been fired today amid hazing allegations. A lot of sick and twisted information coming out. Hagerty left for a classy program no doubt. The BIG can do no wrong...disgusting.

It'll be interesting to see what Hagerty does. I would imagine whatever NIL deal he got would still stay in place and may be enough to keep him there, but I don't imagine anyone from the coaching staff he signed with will be around much longer. Couple that with what already was going to be a difficult path to wins in the Big 10...might be a rough couple years for that young man.
