Should have gotten more than one year.  One must throw out the first couple three years.  Young first time HC coming into a situation where the cupboard was extremely bare.  Virtually all of the culture that the Killer had established was gone.  Certainly last year Nick proved he was growing into the HC position as both a coach and recruiter.  This might not be FBS power 5 football, but it's not high school either.  Not easy to be a HC at this level.  Potential recruits at this level want to know who's going to be their HC even more than at the big time level.  Players at the power 5 schools know there will be a good HC at the helm at all times.  Not at the FCS level.  Can be a crap shoot.  Look at who we replaced the Killer with.  Does anyone want Dale Lennon back?  I didn't think so.

I was told that there were extension talks being held.  I thought it was great news.  It's tough to recruit when you are on your last year.  But a one year extension?  Really?  What the hey Liz.  Why don't you get your butt out on the recruiting trail and ask how many other schools were using the fact that Nick was on the last year of his contract as a recruiting weapon against us.  One more year doesn't help much.  The people I still know who are residents of the area are always very complimentary of the FB program.  The players, as is Nick, are out in the community representing SIU all the time.  It gets noticed.  SIU needs as much good PR as it can get.

I know it seems that I'm always blindly supporting Nick.  I don't know the man and I've never met the man.  But people I know and respect do.  I've never heard a negative comment.  And I'm not forgetting the coaching job he and his staff did this past season.  Incredible job.  SIU is going to jack around and let somebody steal this guy.  Our big 3, basketball, football, and baseball all appear to be headed back in the right direction.  LIZ, LET'S KEEP IT THIS WAY!

I'm not sayin' -- I'm just sayin'!

He has had one half way decent season. If he wins again next year at a better clip than 7-5, say 8-4 or 9-3 then give him two or three years , but he hasnt proven a thing yet. he was one game from .500.

...those posting here--remember this: football is always always always going to be a tough sell at SIU.

Sorry, but it's true. All of which makes what Jerry Kill accomplished at SIU all-the-more remarkable.

(1) US COVID-19 statistics (February 29, 2020-June 16, 2020): 2,124,000 reported cases and 115,052 deaths
(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."
(3) Donald Trump [(Jan 20, 2020), when asked if he's worried about a pandemic]: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s — going to be just fine.”

The Southern Illinoisan asked for a copy of the extension, which was approved by the SIU Board of Trustees at Thursday's meeting, but Saluki Athletics did not have it on hand Monday. SIU athletic director Liz Jarnigan said the extension features more incentive-based bonuses than the previous deal for Hill and his staff, and called it a "measured" deal considering the program's lack of overall success and poor attendance.

"We did discuss (a longer extension), but, again, the overall record was 17-28 under his tenure," Jarnigan said. "We were measured what we could possibly do, and also given the fact that our attendance continues to be poor, which causes us to be in a very difficult time to finance salary increases. The goal, again, would be to achieve sustained success and get fans in the stands, and then we can do what we really want to do for him and his staff."

I'm all for putting the pressure on the football program to win now but this seems pretty harsh given how last season ended, especially towards an alum.  The truth is, people are disinterested from far before Hill got here.  Lennon missed the playoffs 6 straight years after a brand new stadium was built, should have had all the momentum in the world.  Hill was an out of the box hire that was always going to take time.  I know he's only had one half of a good season but this is kinda killing any positive momentum that was being built with the program at the end of last year.

The article goes on to mention that football was 5th in the MVFC in attendance like that's a bad thing.  They've missed the playoffs 9 seasons in a row now and were coming off a 2-9 season, not sure what they're expecting.

It’s clear 2020 is a big season for Hill. Win big and there will be a healthy extension offered, fall flat and ... ?

I really like Hill and am glad they finished strong, but I don’t mind this as much as some others. It’s time to get some better QB play and make the playoffs.

Yeah, not a fan of this move. Hill seems to be hitting his stride as a young coach and the program feels like it’s on the rise. I think he got a bit of a shaft with this deal.

Let’s hope the improvement continues next season and Jarnigan rewards him with a big raise and contract extension.

Uhhhh. A one year extension makes perfect sense. He has a good year next year and he will get the extension

absolutely. you cant expect a new AD to come in and give a fat extension after a single winning season. everyone likes Nick but this is business. he's still a very inexperienced coach and she is smart to make sure last season wasn't just a fluke.  no need to get stupid.

Craving a McBride Special!

After the Redturd game where we played poorly, we were 2 - 4. I was done with Hill at that point. But he turned it around - starting playing Javon Williams more, and the D improved.

Promising ... but there's that dark QB cloud on the horizon! Just have to improve there. And no more DJ Davis or Jeremy Chinn! Next year's schedule is just brutal with Bucky Badger, UNI, and a final road game at new member UND on the schedule. At least no NDSU! Seven wins won't be easy. https://siusalukis.com/sports/football/schedule/2020

And even though some say football is a tough sell at SIU, with our great facilities, beautiful campus, etc, there is no reason we can't recruit good talent and be just as successful as the Redturds or Leathernecks!

I think a one year extension is completely appropriate considering Hill's record. He's got two years to prove he can get it done, and I sure hope he does!

No one in their right mind would give a 17-28 coach a big extension.

Contracts don't protect us in any way at all. Keep them short. A long deal wont' keep him here if he wants to leave.

This is fair.

if attendance is a key factor in nick getting a raise, i'm afraid he will die a poor man.

Liz said on a basketball pre-game show a few months ago that we can't afford the raises we want to give him and his staff while attendance is in the toilet.  Your point is well taken!

The article said SIU was 5th in the MVFC in attendance.  That doesn’t sound in the toilet to me for a program that’s missed the playoffs 9 years in a row.
