I’m glad that Sambursky is speaking up, but I would still have wished that he elaborated on what necessitates the urgent removal of Randy Dunn. I have said it before and I’ll say it again, if the votes existed for Dunn to be gone, this would have already played out. The board doesn’t have the votes to push him out.

Ultimately this divisiveness will split the system. That would be a severe blow to SIU and especially Carbondale.

It is likely time to disband the board and completely separate the two universities.  The treatment E is receiving is shameful with Carbondale stealing money in the board room and last year stealing money for everyone to see.  The Carbondale campus has to implement reforms.

IF Dunn manages to stick around, it's time to turn up the heat on this pot licker.

IF Dunn manages to stick around, it's time to turn up the heat on this pot licker.

The board bungled a basic case to make Dunn go away. It was enrollment. Note I say “was”.

Not only has enrollment declined under his watch in Carbondale, but Edwardsville enrollment growth has more or less leveled off. It was a simple case to make, but the Carbondale trustees absolutely botched that case. Now Edwardsville has absolutely circled the wagons for Dunn and to return to the 60/40 allocation policy, as we would  all be arguing for if we were alums of SIUE instead of SIUC.

The Carbondale trustees simply don’t have the votes to remove Dunn right now. If they did, either a general meeting of the board as a whole would have been called, or some sort of settlement would be reached between the BOT and Dr. Dunn. Now can that change? Yes, but we are currently at an impasse as we stand.

Don’t forget most of the Carbondale trustees were on the board when Dunn got his fat contract extension near the end of 2016. The only change was Dr. Herrin, who was from Harrisburg, retiring from the board and Tom Britton, a former administrator from Carbondale, going into his spot.

If you go outside of the Carbondale bubble, you will find the anger at the campus isn’t just limited to Randy Dunn. The people of this region are dissatisfied with a great many things at SIU. SIU needs a board with representation from throughout Southern Illinois, not just Carbondale and Murphysboro. Maybe the next governor will make that happen since we also know the current governor doesn’t care about public higher education in Illinois.

The current gov is worse than previous how?  The previous governors created the mess we are dealing with now.  If Rauner had any stones, he'd end the practice of one school parasiting another by virtue of a two school board.  I think it'd be more accurate to say the current governor (and hopefully past ones) don't care about the schools inflating their staff and faculty to fleece taxpayers and the students.

I didn’t say he was worse. He did appoint the people who extended Randy even though enrollment has continued to tank. Then they *allegedly* have a faction that wants Randy out and Glenn Poshard, who created a lot of the problems with enrollment, back in.

To me, that sounds like more of the same. I’m happy to clarify.

The SIU BOT will meet in a special emergency meeting Thursday to discuss the dismissal of Dunn.

If he deserves to go, it shouldn’t be over the “Carbondale bitchers” comment. It should be over enrollment.

Full-time equivalent enrollment (FTE) dropped from 15,326 to 12,423 on the Carbondale campus from 2014 to 2017.

At Edwardsville FTE went down from 11,767 to 11,523, which is down from their all time high of 12,072 in 2011. Neither campus is growing.

I’m so burned out by this I’m ambivalent. I just don’t know if the BOT can bring in a successor who can turn around enrollment. This seems pretty bleak.

There is a whole lot more than a bitchers comment. You don't get an emergency board meeting called for that one email. From the D.E.: "the university’s general counsel has sent 1,000 pages of un-redacted correspondence to the trustees over the course of the last ten days."

We will have to see who the BOT pick for President is. I’m saving up any celebration for a period where enrollment has increased. I don’t see this happening for a while.

They will name an interim and then name a committee and have a national search so it will probably be at least a year.

Glad to hear this era is ending shortly.  Adios Dunn....yeah freakin' pot licker!

Also happy to hear they're engaging in a national search.  The board has to get this right.  Obviously correcting the enrollment issue is paramount.

They always go through the same interim, committee, national search routine and that hasn't turned out well in a long time.

That absolutely has to change this time.  The board needs to realize that SIU's future and existence is relying on their ability to make the right decision.  If it doesn't pan out again, the next step is removing every individual on the board and starting over.  That would be devastating and another incredible setback for the university.  SIU deserves better!
