@carrcar playing other teams at your level does nothing for your rpi the expense is more than a lower division level team also when you are building a program take the win build confidence unfortunately these are the times it is not what everyone wants but sometimes it is the reality of being mid major until you force people to play you
Now don’t go trying to be rational about this 🤣
That is not rational. Playing a D2 is never better than the alternative. Mid majors cannot schedule these games, not schedule eachother, and then whine about not being able to get games.
It is nonsense.

Let’s see play a low major that hurts your RPI no matter what.
Orrrrrrrrr
pay 1/3 as much to play a D-2 that does not hurt you.
yea you are right of course 🙄
Orrr, all the decent mid majors who whine about no one scheduling them and schedule D2 schools...play eachother instead.
Don't be obtuse.
And yes, playing a D2 or lower hurts you. Especially if you are in at large conversation.
There are decent mid majors all over the Midwest. And South. And north. There is no excuse to play non-D1 schools.
I will try to go slow here.
SIU wanted a home game
There is not a decent mid major on the planet coming to Carbondale next year for less than a shitload of money.
playing RPI 40097 Howard hurts your SOS and RPI
playing D2 Fred’s mechanical super school cost very little. They do not count and can not hurt you.
I don’t know what else to say. Unless you want to open the wallet this is the best option
@barkeep-1967 since when does being practical about a budget and facts ever enter any of the world of common sense maybe I am the one who is lost
I know from a practicality standpoint, playing a D2 school makes sense given the circumstances. However, I would rather see SIU play Howard, or any other 300+ team at home rather than playing someone who doesn't even give you a mark in the win column in the eyes of the selection committee and ESPN. And if by some chance SIU loses to a D2? It can be an occurrence that negatively defines an entire season.
Again, I get the logic here, but personally I don't like it.

On a bigger-picture note with next year's slate, I like the way the schedule has come together so far, and I'm guessing there is still another game or two we don't yet know about. But IF Southern can pick up a big win or two in the Virgin Islands AND beat SLU at home (and SLU has a strong year as is expected), that's the makings of a nice resume. That said, there are obviously several opportunities to get tripped up, including challenging road games against San Francisco and Tulsa.
Overall, we have a good schedule. I'm okay with the D2 opponent since we have a pretty good schedule around that. Selfishly, I like the fact that they are having that home game, even it being a D2, because I enjoy going to the games.
Don't patronize me. The fact that you are arguing a strawman shows you have nothing to stand on.
I am quite clearly saying they should set up series. Saying they have no choice but to play D2s is a cop-out and you know it.
To act like the choices are a D2 or a fucing MEAC and that alone in insultingly disingenuous.

I don't need to see a parade of D2 and MEAC games like we saw under BH but I don't mind seeing 1 a year. Don't think it's a bad thing to gain confidence early in the season and get some of the young guys some minutes. Even the best schools in the country play these games.

No, they objectively do not except for very very rarely.. Over the last two seasons with regular non conference schedules(2018-19 and 2019-20), teams from the AAC, ACC, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, PAC 12, and SEC collectively played 12 total games against non-D1 schools, and 3 of those were against Chaminade in the Maui tournament.

Don't get me started about the loss to new D2 powerhouse Ohio Dominican in 2011. Fresh from NAIA, 4 wins that season including their Super Bowl vs the Salukis! Not saying our 2011 team was going anywhere, but that game really set a tone for the rest of the season

Really ? You understand a budget right ? Money is tight and that is fact. I don’t know if you know this but SIU is a very dangerous team next year. No tournament caliber mid major is going to schedule a game in Carbondale. None not even to start a home and home
Top tier teams don't want to come to Carbondale, but they may wish to come to St. Louis. When the students are on break may be a chance to have a holiday game.
