Seems this topic has been unclear and I could be completely incorrect but I think I figured it out.

For the 21-22 season, schools will be able to exceed the current scholarship limits.

This could mean that a team with 13 current scholarship players in 20-21, all of those players “could be” offered an additional year of eligibility regardless of incoming recruits.  So some teams will end up with more than 13 scholly players next year.

So for example, if SIU chooses to offer another year of eligibility to AD and JL, we could end up with 15 scholarships players for 21-22.  This is a one time thing though.  Subsequent years will be back to 13.  However, it does seem that ALL current players will be afforded an extension if the player and school chooses. could become tricky with future recruiting though.

for SIU, the attached screen shot it where I see us.  We could have 15 in 21-22 but we’d be limited to 13 in 22-23. And unless the roster changes (odds are it will maybe even in 21-22) we don’t have any room for recruits is 21-22 or 22-23.

Affordability of a school to offer the scholarships over current limits is relevant too.

Below is an example as it relates to football from ncaasports.org

Then again, I could be wrong.

What about athletic scholarships?
There are two factors that control the availability of scholarships at the D1 and D2 levels. The
NCAA scholarship limits
per sport and whether or not the school is fully funded. For D1 fall sports, seniors who have scholarships and who will be using the extra year of eligibility will not count against the team's scholarship limit for the 2021-22 season.

This does not mean a college will go over the limit of maximum scholarships. Each school will decide how many scholarships they can fund for each team depending on their budget.
In a recent survey
, 80% of college coaches said they do not plan on cutting scholarships as part of their budget cutting measures. For recruits pursuing an athletic scholarship, hopefully this means the maximum, and possibly over the maximum number of scholarships, will be available for the 2021-22 school year.

Here is an example of how this could play out for a college team:
·
A fully funded NCAA D1 FBS football team has a maximum of 85 scholarships. All D1 FBS scholarships are full-rides.
·
For the 2020-21 season, the team has 25 seniors on scholarship. Let’s say all of these seniors get an extra year of eligibility.
·
For the 2021-22 school year, this program could bring back up to 25 seniors and all of those seniors are eligible to keep their scholarships.
·
If the school is able to fund the maximum number of scholarships it can for the 2021-22 school year, they could have 110 athletes on scholarships. That means 25 returning seniors and 85 others.
The determining factor is whether or not a school can afford to give scholarships over the maximum.

The business of college basketball has changed, both with players able to leave and coaches rescinding scholarships.  Whether this is good or bad overall, I don't know, but I would expect the coaches to continue to prepare for continued roster churn, potentially even of players within the rotation but definitely players outside the rotation.  These things like rotations are always subject to change, but if I am on the current team and seeing us continue to offer people, then it would make me say, "Hmmmmm."

One thing to add.  Even without this extended eligibility, Southern would have only had 1 scholarship available for the 22-23 season at the end of JD Muila's eligibility.  With his injury that will fill that scholarship that would have gone to a newcomer for that season.  Now adding Muila, we will have 7 scholarship Seniors for the 2022-2013 season if all current players return for the next two years.    Looking on the bright side, We will have one of the most experienced teams in the NCAA that season.

Well I count 6 with Muila.  Regardless, kind of why I think the current roster won’t remain intact or some could get extended eligibility to balance out classes.  Who knows.  Unprecedented times.

As of now, the Senior class in 22-23 will be Muila, Dembele, Harvey, Domask, Jones, Brown, and Verplancken.

This does not consider any transfers out or a red-shirt year that involves any of the four players that have not previously had a red-shirt year, Domask, Jones, Brown or Verplancken.
