The Oklahoma State deal is fantastic considering a home game next year as part of the equation.
The noncon home schedule, though, is pure cringe, for the second straight year, which is why I was so alarmed when I saw the Saint Louis game was on the road, contrary to what had been previously reported.
Overall, there are just too many games against likely bottom-third of D-I opponents. Even if Southern had a really, really good year and somehow was flirting with the bubble, can you imagine the talking heads having a field day going over some of those non-con opponents? That four-game stretch in December of Alcorn State, Lincoln, Chicago State and at SEMO might be the worst four-game stretch of schedule I can remember for the program.
The SLU game is on the road because that is what it should have been based off the rotating nature of the series. The home game for us was supposed to be last year, but SIU cancelled that game, not SLU. This year was always due to be on the road at their place.
It's kind of disingenuous of an argument. You can't look at it in a vacuum.
Yes those teams are playing them, but SIU is playing all of them. Along with a non-D1.
Tennessee State is also in the same conference as Austin Peay and SEMO.
Mullins with Mike Reis on the schedule:
For those that want to criticize the non-conference home schedule.
I'm going to use common sense, and perspective.
The following schools will play Alcorn State at HOME this season.
Ole Miss, Wichita State, UTEP, Arizona State, Tennessee, Dayton, Minnesota, Southern Illinois. I count four Power 5's and solid Mid Majors.
The following schools will play Chicago State at HOME this season.
Northwestern, Marquette, Minnesota, Kent State, Marshall and Southern Illinois. I count three Power 5's. and two solid Mid Majors.
The following schools will play Tennessee State at HOME this season.
Southern Illinois, Saint Louis, Austin Peay as well as SEMO, a regional school we've had on our schedule for 30 plus years.
We will play UNLV, OSU, and potentially Minnesota. Throw in a much better conference and schedule with the additions of Belmont, Murray and UIC, and you have a solid slate for a Non top 25/50 Mid Major building a program. Doubters are gonna doubt. Before complaining, think about it and use some perspective. I've never had to schedule a D1 basketball schedule before, don't know the issues or challenges. Who am I to judge? Trust the process, if you don't want to, that's on you.
GO DAWGS!
So because some other schools (several of which have plenty of marquee home games playing in their power conferences) play one or two of the sucky teams Southern is playing, it's OK that Southern is playing all of those sucky teams, and that the average NET of our home opponents will probably be around 285? Got it.
Anyways, I had a hunch some of you were prematurely crediting the huckster for the OK State series, and sure enough: https://twitter.com/MikeReisSIU/status/1572024394364620801

This year isn't great but Mullins did confirm Saint Louis will be coming to Carbondale next year in addition to Oklahoma State and Southern Indiana. Guessing we get SEMO at home too next year. Next year looks like a much better home schedule. Hopefully Domask and Jones are back because it could be a really special season.

Some of ya'll may have jumped the gun a bit on giving credit to the former coach for the Oklahoma State series. Sounds like he wasn't involved much, if at all.
As far as the home schedule, Mullins indicated that they tried hard to get (presumably better) other teams in and couldn't on the dates they needed. Pretty odd (and sad) that they couldn't get ANYONE better than what they got, but that's how he put it. The schedule would look quite a bit better if you subbed in a Wright State or Northern Kentucky or Ball State, etc., for Alcorn and Chicago State.

Toward the end of this interview, Reis actually says SLU paid Southern to get out of coming to Carbondale this year. Don't like it ... Southern needed a good home game this year.

At the risk of sounding redundant, Bryan Mullins will play, and wants to play, anyone, anywhere, any time. He is EXACTLY the same person as a coach, as he was as a player. AND as he has publicly stated, expects to win every game he coaches.
