I think this is the first I've heard that Hensley needs a waiver and his eligibility for the season is uncertain.

I thought he and D'Amico would likely split time at the 4. Sure hope Troy is in a good place, health-wise.

This is his 3rd D1 school. Guess he went to UNC-Greensboro freshman year. From the NCAA:

"Let’s suppose you want to transfer to your third four-year school. Let’s also suppose that the previous two four-year colleges you attended offered your sport. In this hypothetical, the transfer is allowed but with a penalty of sitting out a year. That means you will not play and possibly not practice with the team for an entire year."

So he has asked for a special dispensation from the Pope of the NCAA to play this year I assume.

The NCAA has been very difficult to get waivers from over the last year in these situations (see Noah Fenske). Quite possibly the worst governing body in all of sports. They can't get a handle on NIL/transfer portal issues (biggest threat/issue to college athletics as I see it) , but have decided their hill to die on is going to be this second transfer with little regard for the student athletes situation.

I have no idea on Hensley's situation (forced out by the coach, didn't like his playing time, getting closer to family, etc.) and whether I think it warrants a waiver but I do know there are absolutely situations where programs force a kid out or there is a coaching change that should qualify someone for a waiver that they are denying. Just an absolute dumpster fire of an organization.

I believe he followed his coach from UNCG to Cincinnati. I also thought if there is a coaching change a player can leave and it doesn't count against his transfer limit. This might be the grounds for which they are asking for a waiver.

No this year they came out and said coaching change wouldn’t be a reason for giving a waiver (see Noah Fenske). One for free and then after that the big bad NCAA will force you to stay there or sit a year with very limited exceptions. Grad transfer would allow another year, but it appears that isn’t the case for Hensley.

Yes, but when Hensley transferred from UNCG I believe that rule was in place. Therefore, they might be asserting he should be grandfathered in. Just a theory, but a viable one.

@resaluki-88 that is exactly what Fenske was claiming. Transferred prior to the rule being put in place, but prior to getting the waiver. The NCAA is really cracking down on this. I wouldn’t count on having Hensley this year.

I'm just speculating - have no idea about his situation. It would be a shame if he couldn't play this year, because I think he's got some scoring chops and we are really going to need him.

Agreed. Really good size and moves like a guard. Hopefully we get lucky!

Needless to say, best-case scenario is Hensley is eligible. This team was picked 9th with most assuming everyone would be available, so we don't want to start subtracting potentially key pieces.

That said, if he doesn't get the waiver, I'm wondering if Kennard Davis will have more opportunity at the 3 and 4 spots. Although a freshman, he seems physically ready to handle most 6-5 to 6-8 type of guys he'd match up with there, and probably could back up D'Amico if he doesn't earn a starting spot. Another option could be having Rupert, who apparently has been working on his shooting range, play some 4 ... that scenario would work better if Hornecker is able to give some decent minutes at the 5 (along with Ebube).

Yep, it's going to suck if Hensley isn't available this year. He is more athletic than D'Amico and could really cause some matchup problems at the 4. I know he got hurt, but when healthy I think he was underutilized for whatever reason at Cincinnati.

Hensley is also 6' 8" and, according to his bio, he's a great leaper which might translate into some serious rebounding or shot blocking. How long is the NCAA going to wait before they let him know?

Fenske found out 3 days ago...well into the season. Who knows, but it doesn't appear they are in much of a hurry to let these kids know one way or the other. I guess it also might depend on any appeals.

I don’t need to see Kennard playing Domask Freshman minutes but if this team isn’t going to contend, Kennard needs to be playing every single game.

@salukiworld

Without ANY inside info, I would be surprised if he didn't regardless of our contention.  Time will tell, but I still think he is one of our better players.

Luke Martin has done a great job getting out to practice and posting player interviews. It would be nice, though, if he (or, gasp, other local media) would provide some substantive health updates soon on guys who are still out, two weeks before the season begins. Are we down to just D'Amico and Hornecker sitting out?

And I find it weird that the Martin interview with Hensley last week was the first time Hensley's eligibility uncertainty surfaced.

If Cade Troy and Ryan aren't playing early that will be a significant hit to the post depth and will probably have to play small like last year with Troy at the 5 which will make it difficult against some of the athletic teams we will face early
