Scottie Ebube.  If you want to know what a player who is too good for SIU looks like, look no further.

Instant offense last year. Takes about one minute of game time to pass the eye test.

I don’t think anyone in The Valley can stop him, to put it simply.

He better see 20 minutes per game. I would assume Mullins and staff will have him in game-ready good shape by November.

Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.

They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.

You need players who are what you call "too good for SIU" (personally, I think that's a defeatist way to look at it) to compete for MVC championships and beat power conference teams in March.

Every year top MVC teams have at least a few players who can hold their own, and then some, against high-quality competition. If you only have players that you apparently think should be at SIU, you're just going to spin your wheels and never win big.

I do agree Ebube has big-time upside.

Although this feels like you’re lecturing me, which is fine, I mostly agree with this.

I actually think talking about specific players (especially unknowns) isn’t terribly productive.

None of us has any idea whether the HC will make adjustments, or if it will be more of the same.

Well since Southern has almost an entire roster of unknowns (newcomers and players who will be asked to play much bigger roles), there's going to be lots of unproductive discussion for the next 5-6 months. 😆

Maybe our expectations are just in the grave at this point but I don’t see Ebube as a player too good for SIU.  He wasn’t even the best player on his high school team and his teammate also went to an MVC school.

Like I said, I don't like the whole "too good for SIU" framing, but in terms of big guys, it's not uncommon for them to be completely different players at age 20 than age 17 once they get some D-I weight room and conditioning under their belts. Plus a lot of high school coaches don't know how to utilize true big men since they don't often have them (Mullins still has something to prove in that regard as well).

Scottie got by in high school by simply being much bigger than everyone he played against and that’s still the case in the Missouri Valley but he’ll always have a low ceiling unless he completely dedicates himself off the court.

@salukiworld 2021 Top 200 Chicago area players.

1. Max Christie, Rolling Meadows - Michigan State

2. Bryce Hopkins, Fenwick - Kentucky

3. Isiah Barnes, Simeon - Michigan

4. Chris Hodges, Schaumburg - Wisconsin

5. Scottie Ebube, Mundelein - Southern Illinois

Among some pretty elite company. SIU was in on Scottie when he was in 8th grade. Potential is there. Will he step up, and will SIU tap into that potential? Don't bet against it.

GO DAWGS!!!

And maybe, just maybe, last year's lack of premium playing time will be just the motivation he needed.  This is D1 basketball and it's completely different than AAU and High School.  The fact that he came back offers me some real hope that he is going to be a different player next year.  And while he doesn't have your traditional post game (or associated moves), neither did Kentucky's Tshiebwe and he still was incredibly dominant.  Imagine him slimming down and vastly improving his cardio and technique.....he could easily be a double digit rebounder in this league.  Add that to his sheer size and you have a potential dominant inside force.   I am NOT saying he will be, I am just saying he could be.

Because he had great size and made a few impressive dunks during the few minutes he played, people are imagining him as a different player: one coming back as a slimmed down, really in great shape player who worked his rear end off this summer to improve his footwork, his positioning for rebounds, his free throw shooting, and his stone hands.

No doubt he has the physical attributes to be a real force inside. If he comes back as imagined, I think he will be. Let's hope he has the maturity to really take the game seriously and do what he has to do this summer. It would be great to have a bigger version of Jerry Jones.

I hope Rupert and Hornecker are also really working on their game this summer. Lots of upside there.

I also hope the coaching staff is really working on their offensive game this summer and especially their coaching of the big men.

I wouldn't characterize him as having "stone hands". I thought he had pretty good hands for the most part. He caught some long passes running at full speed for monster dunks. I think he showed decent hands in the post. What he needs to work on besides his fitness is footwork, post moves and positioning.

Not sure what player Woogers was watching but Scottie does not have stone hands. He caught numerous balls on the run during his limited time on the floor. His hands are not at all bad for a big guy. There was indeed another big guy on the floor who indeed did not have good hands, but it wasn't Ebube.

Hands are good, but as many have said his footwork needs work for sure. He’s too slow making his post moves and if he can develop a little 10-15 foot jumper…he’d be hard so hard to handle. Oh and for the love of God free throws…he’s going to get fouled a lot, can’t shoot 50% or worse. Need to

make them pay!

"stone" is too strong a word, but he absolutely dropped some inside passes that Rupert would have caught. I'd say better hands than JD but not as good as Clarence. Hope he runs some drills on that this summer. He and Rupert definitely need to work on their free throws.

People seem to be forgetting about our 7-footer from Texas. He could easily be our best offensive player and is certainly a better shooter than the other two.
