From Todd Hefferman in the Southern Illinoisan:
"No. 1 — Smithpeters honored by midmajormadness.com: Smithpeters, a Harrisburg native who is now an assistant coach for John A. Logan College with his brother, Kyle, was selected as SIU's most definitive player of the 2010s by midmajormadness.com."
=====
I don't care how you define 'definitive', but to name Tyler Smithpeters the most definitive player of the 2010s speaks volumes about SIU MBB in the last decade.
Speaking of the 'last decade' (and most folks say we're in the next decade already...even though the pinheads correctly say we're not)...
SIU's conference record from Jan 1, 2010 through Jan 31, 2019 (i.e. the last decade to most of us) is, by my calculation...149-170--with Chris Lowery's clubs contributing a less-than-stellar MVC W-L record of 15-38 in calendar years 2010, 2011 and 2012.
So maybe Tyler Smithpeters is, in fact, SIU's most definitive player of the 2010s.
No snark intended 😉
[so on second thought...after looking at the decade's stats...let's do a poll...]
(1) US COVID-19 statistics (February 29, 2020-June 16, 2020): 2,124,000 reported cases and 115,052 deaths
(2) Donald Trump (June 15, 2020) told a group of senior citizens that there would be very few cases of COVID-19 if the US stopped its testing and contact tracing: "If we stop testing right now, we'd have very few cases, actually."
(3) Donald Trump [(Jan 20, 2020), when asked if he's worried about a pandemic]: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s — going to be just fine.”
...bump

Nothing against Tyler, but no. Just no.
Perhaps it speaks more about the journalism the Southern provided in the last decade by sweeping the crap that came out of Lingle and the Arena under the rug.
Most definitive has to be Sean O’Brien or Anthony Beane. You could even go with Aaron Cook or Armon Fletcher. I’m grateful for anyone who chooses to be a Saluki, and I’m sure he was a great senior leader, but when I think SIU basketball in the 2010s I do not think Tyler Smithpeters.
I hope Tyler can assist in mending some fences between SIU and John A Logan. Southern should be considered a solid path for those individuals that have aspirations of finishing their collegiate careers at a D1 school with a track record for producing winners!
Wow. Did this ever go off the rails on so many levels.
You all realize that the question was "definitive" player, and not "best" player?
Ugh. Who knows what the fuckwit who wrote that meant, but I'm going to assume the best, so "definitive" it is. So this player should be someone who is just...OK. Not bad... Has his moments...but pretty much neither here nor there.
TS pretty much embodies that, though he is better than that. I would go with Leo Vincent, as I said in another thread.
AGAIN: This wasn't about "best": READ.

And here we see a prime example of how to generate traffic to your website: pump out a list that you know will tick everyone off, and now every school's message board is linking back to their article.

Get off your high horse. You said you don’t even know what he meant by definitive so I don’t see why you bother wasting your time to slander other posters for apparently going “off the rails”.
TS was a class guy and it was great to have a local kid represent SIU.
Good grief.
I don't even know what to say to this.
Sad (but typical) that it is considered "high horse" to want precision from language. Why in the F do you think the question was phrased that way? Me? I think words matter, so I assumed that "definitive" was chosen for a reason over "best." And you know how I know I'm right? Because the guy picked Tyler Smithpeters instead of, say, Anthony Beane.
Do any of you guys really think this guy thinks that TS was SIU's best player of the 2010s? I'm pretty sure there is a reason (other than increasing the number of syllables) the guy chose "definitive" over "best."
And his choice is actually not bad: TS was OK. He tried hard and had his moments. But he really didn't stack up against the best of the Valley. Just like SIU in the 2010s, hence the guy's choice. I still think my choice of Leo Vincent is better, but I'm OK with this.
High horse?
Please explain.

OK, you're right: I was being a d!ck a bit.
But "slander"? Come on.
