Filewich played 5 minutes tonight.  I get they shortened the rotation needing to come back but that's a huge disappointment after what he did last year.

D’Amico has real potential.

I'm sure glad somebody sees it.  I'm struggling to.

I was watching him tonight, and he looks to me like he belongs on a D1 basketball court. He moves well on D and, though he's a bit tentative on O, seems to get it. He's a work in progress, but I liked what I saw from him. I did not think he was any sort of liability when he was in there anyway.

Basically agree with this. Too early to draw conclusions. He’s been tentative on offense but that is very normal for a freshman who has played little so far. The issue is when he’s out there with Muila at this point, there’s really only three legit scoring threats on the floor, which ain’t ideal.

Coupet and Filewich both (rightfully) appeared to be in the doghouse as the game went on. Not enough fight from either of those guys in the first half. Agree with an earlier post that Coupet’s defense has mostly underwhelmed.

Very ugly game, no doubt. Still not panicked, this team could very easily be 6-0, or 0-6. While not thrilled, I'm okay at 3-3 this far down the road. As mentioned before, lots of work to be done. The free throw, rebounding and turnover shitshow is nothing short of pathetic/embarrassing. They are really missing Brown.

Nevertheless, like the grit and defense a lot. They're going to be okay.

March on triumphantly!

I still can’t understand the obsession with Foster by many. So many were speculating over the summer whether he’d be breaking into the starting lineup. He’s a freshman who played at a very low high school competition level. Let him learn in the shadows and grow. Got a long way to go. D’Amico, however, has looked like a guy that belongs on the floor and I think you can mostly point at his size and high school competition for preparing him for early success. He’s not a star and likely won’t look like one for a long time, if ever. But he’s very smooth and I’ll take that for now.

@maroonloon can’t start a without winning the first one! You are correct, we really need Brown back. It is evident.

We run some really great sets, we’re just having trouble with our guys executing. It’ll all click.

Well the bipolar board was in full blown depressive mode for most of this game I see. I got up at 4:30 this morning, drove non-stop from my home in Florida and went to the game. I had this intuitive feeling that I sometimes get about stuff, that the Salukis were going to win this game, period. The last 10 minutes of the game made it worth every one of the 652 miles. Yeah, we slacked for the other 30, but the defense the final 10 minutes was a thing of beauty. Domask put on an offensive clinic. OK. Cue up Jimi Hendrix, “Manic Depression” in 5,4,3…….

It’s Year 3 and this team is clearly not good.  Very mediocre.

Why anyone cares about 4 years from now is beyond me.

We need help right now.  Not later.

Basically our only hope with this group is Jones and Domask scoring 20 per game.  And even with that tonight, still an awful performance  against 0-5 Alcorn State, at HOME.

If we don’t make major strides this year, then what?   Do we have stud freshmen coming in next year?

The Salukis have scored no more than 28 points in the first half of any of the last five games.

While Southern doesn’t have an elite amount of offensive talent by any stretch, they can and need to be a lot better at that end. Time to go back to the drawing board. First step of fixing something is admitting you have a problem …

Weird game--stunned to have come away with a win. Scratching my head, but in a good way, I guess. Some thoughts:

Positive:

On-ball defense was good--really good, even. Alcorn was just hitting shots all night: not much you can do about that. BUT on-ball defense against Alcorn is not the same as defending Drake or Loyola, so I'm not really sure how telling that was. Anyway the D looked great tonight, and it's why we eventually won this shitbag game.

Domask got his groove back tonight after a dismal first half. I hope he remembers that he's a stud in future games.

They didn't quit. I was about ready to walk out of there halfway through the second half, but damned if they didn't keep fighting; I wasn't about to quit if they weren't. I was really impressed with that.

Muila is not the foul machine he was in the first couple of games. In fact, I thought two of his three fouls were BS.

We didn't foul a lot, and our turnovers--especially in the second half--were minimal. I was deeply impressed by that.

Negative:

Obviously, FT shooting. Holy eff . . . If we had shot even a halfway respectable 70 percent, that wouldn't have been a nail biter. Forty FREAKING percent, including 2-9 from our point guard! And WTF is Muila doing? And why is he even in the game when it's on the line? Awful.

The first half was just a clusterf###. Tentative, WTF am I doing out here basketball. It was embarrassing. Nobody looked good. Well, except for the D, but Alcorn was simply on fire.

Lots of what we would have called--back in the day--d#ckfingers. They outrebounded us by a wide margin partly because our guys didn't seal rebounds or simply had no handle on them. I don't know how you fix that. There were so many times that we should have had the ball but they wound up with it. Super frustrating and annoying. Muila does not have good hands; I'm hoping he's still shaking rust off.

Other stuff

Filewich hardly played. Maybe there were matchup concerns? Alcorn did seem to have some quick dudes, but if KF can't hang with the likes of Alcorn big men, how's he going to fare in the Valley?

Offensively, we still don't have much beyond Domask and Jones. I was hoping to something from Verplancken tonight--or anyone, really--but nope. Until that gets fixed we're going to be pretty easy to defend.

Ugh.

You had an intuitive feeling that SIU was going to beat a bad 0-4 team at home?

And you’re making fun of mental illness?  LMFAO.

you, sir, are a hoot.

No issues. It's just the common fan mindset that they should replace the awful starting left tackle and insert the backup. But there's a reason they're the backup. And there's a reason Foster isn't playing yet. I have no trepidation that Mullins is not playing his best guys in hope of a payoff 3-4 years from now. I don't want Domask playing 36 minutes a game, but we just played a battle tested team that had 11 days off after coming back from an exhausting trip and we're a bit short handed. People are pushing panic buttons when I simply don't understand why. The only thing that's truly causing me concern is that we've seen a pattern of Mullins recruiting skilled players but we are not recruiting enough length and athleticism. I'm hoping that is noticed and fixed.

Was out, but the thought of Bobber storming the floor after beating Alcorn State, all by himself, is giving me a hearty laugh lol. I know it didn’t happen, but we can dream lol

Don’t think there’s a Wonders obsession anymore.  If he were great he’d be playing.  But they’re down Harvey & Brown right now and lost Banks in this game, eventually you have to decide whether it’s worth it to sit him the year as opposed to shortening your rotation further and playing Jones & Domask too many minutes
