Moser didn't fare well at ISU and started slowly at Loyola, but I think he has grown over the course of his career and the Final Four is one helluva notch in his belt. At this point he has to be considered among the top Valley coaches. Guessing his time at SLU under Majerus (post-ISU) was helpful in his growth.
I'll be curious what he can do with his current group because they have enough pieces to be an NCAA team, and a return trip to the NCAAs would go a long way to address any one-hit wonder stigma. Their non-conference showing this season was a bit disappointing.
Moser's success at Loyola began with the addition of Bryan Mullins to his staff. Prior to that, Moser was a coach with mediocre results. Moser hired Bryan at the beginning of the 13-14 season. The performance of Loyola going forward after Bryan's recruits there are gone will truly provide the evidence of Moser's coaching ability.

I believe you have to look at Moser's transformation before Majerus and after Majerus he improved dramatically as a coach after spending a few seasons as an assistant at SLU also getting quality and hungry Mullins helped also catching lightning in a bottle with recruits who developed and didn't leave should also be considered
What has been built at Drake is nothing short of remarkable. Watching them stomp all over SIU definitely reinforced our need for a size/athleticism infusion, but that's for another post. I just wanted to take some time to show appreciation for what they're doing. If they still had Robbins, they'd be top 20 good. Its a shame he left, but its still a great time to be a Drake fan. They're more than deserving of some good years and outside of SIU, they're easily my second favorite MVC team to root for.
I'll be very interested to see how they stack up against Loyola and teams like Bradley and Mo State who have the ability to beat people up with their size and strength.

Mullins did not become an assistant coach at Loyola until 2015. Before that he was Director of Basketball Operations. By 2015, they already had guys like Devon Turk, Milton Doyle, Ben Richardson, Donte Ingram, and Montel James. Clayton Custer transferred to Loyola for the 2015 season and had to sit out. I doubt most of these guys were recruited by B.M. as Director of Basketball Operations. Custer possibly. Custer BTW is their current Director of Player Development!
Give Porter a little credit. He definitely became a better coach after becoming the Associate Head Coach under Majerus. I Did think he screwed up in that Michigan Final Four game by not feeding Krutwig way more. Would have gotten Michigan's big man in foul trouble and made that game way closer!
And he has kept up the success since the Final Four, winning the MVC in 2018 and coming in second last year.

There is no doubt the moment that Bryan Mullins became involved with the Loyola basketball program he was influencing their current players. I was not insinuating that Bryan recruited players to the program while he was Director of Basketball Operations. There are NCAA rules in place that would not have allowed him to do that. I can almost guarantee that Bryan did not sit in an office for two years and did get involved in teaching the game one on one and off season workouts with Loyola Players. The fact that he began recruiting as an Assistant Coach in 2015 and then as the Associate Head Coach in 2018, is why there are still players in the Loyola program that Bryan had recruited. My point is that once those players have graduated we will see if Coach Moser can keep the same caliber of training, and coaching to get the recruits to play above their potential like Loyola teams played when Bryan was on their bench.
Maybe Custer will be able to instill the same drive to future players that I am sure Bryan brought to their court. I truly doubt Coach Moser alone can sustain that in his players.
Moser is BBQ minus one year when Mullins was Calling the shots. I don’t personally dislike him. He seems like a decent enough guy. I just don’t think he is a very good coach. There is also the fact Loyola has been pumping more money into their team than any of the other MVC teams. They would not even had made the tournament if not for winning in STL. As was said let’s see what happens when Krut is gone and they get the Wolves Mullins did not want.
Loyola blows out Valpo and moves to 6-1, Valpo moves to 0-3. Loyola also moves into the top 25 in KenPom. Assuming they keep it up, the Valley might just be a two bid league and possibly a 3 bid league if Drake keeps it up?
Illinois State beats Bradley by 15 to move to 2-5, Bradley to 3-2. DJ Horne really stepped up for the Turds.

With (hopefully) a healthy Mulia back, Kyler, and the big freshman we should be a whole lot stronger in the middle next year.
While the outlook for our post game and rebounding does project much better for next year and beyond, I'd still like to see another true big with some vertical athleticism, preferably in the form of a grad transfer situation added to next years roster along with an athletic wing similar to an Armon Fletcher-type who can move and defend.
I realize its a big, big ask, but if both somehow happen while at the same time we retain all of our core pieces, the sky would be the limit.

Agreed. I would say a long, athletic wing who can really defend would fill a glaring need and make SIU a legit title contender next year, provided key guys return, are healthy, the newcomers add what we’re hoping, etc.

In the only MVC game today, Valpo (1-3) got their first Valley win on the road at Illinois State (2-6). Donovan Clay had 20 points and the Crusaders led wire to wire.
Darn the luck
Harry Potters dominate Bradley 69-56 but it was not that close
Valpo sweeps Illinois State on the road to move to 2-3, Redturds move to 2-7. Brutal sweep for ISU Red against an undermanned Valpo team at home coming off the win against Bradley
