If a player was thinking of coming to SIU and read TB's newsletter would think twice. Not going to get any playing time as Hucky will not be worried about player development, just making the tournament. Injuries was the excuse used to play just 6/7, with the new mandate 6 will be the most to get PT.

When has he ever been concerned about player development? He only cares about keeping his job.

It’s a year too late for the NCAA or bust banner to be flown.  If we do make the NCAAs it will be short term gain and another long term slog as 2019-2020’s roster is very grim.

I am much more interested in the sustainability of the program and not just a one year in ten flash in the pan.

Absolutely.  SIU probably has a decent chance to make the NIT next year unless they luck out and have 1 good weekend in STL, which any team could.  Is making the NCAA Tournament and getting your ass kicked in the first round really worth another foolish contract extension and pay raise for Barry Hinson??

Of course it's not. SIU admins really dropped the ball this year. I won't be too upset if guys transfer right now.

Hinson has the ears of the money, until that changes I don't see the NCAA line in the sand holding

I agree, this is beginning to sound like hollow promises to a frustrated fan base.  My guess is Hinson stays for duration of the current contract.  If any sniff of a post season tourney is made, his support will push for an extension.  We have seen how that goes.

If he does luck into an NCAA birth, it will most likely be one & out.  And there is no hope of another school being dumb enough to hire him away.  No one else is intrigued by self promoting amateur comedians who sell BBQ sauce as a side gig.

Bring back FLOOR BURN U !!

It has been laid out  to Barry.

An NIT bid will not save his ass this time. It is an NCAA tournament bid or his time at SIU is over. I said that 2 weeks ago and it has been reinforced several times by the powers that be.   Barry is out of time and he knows it.  This is why I keep saying to get ready for the scorched earth Hinson media circus that will begin soon

The only recurring argument I've seen for why Barry Hinson shouldn't have been canned this year is because he's arguably bringing back his most talented team he's had at SIU next season. It doesn't hold much water for me, though. With Barry at the helm, the only way the long term health of the program improves is if he pulls off a Loyola-esque performance in 18-19 and higher profile recruits want to come to SIU and play for him.

Anyone think that's going to happen?

If we are stuck with Barry, I do hope they win as many games as possible and Hinson, fully understanding of his situation in not having great backing/long-term security at SIU, tries like hell to use that moderate success to make even a lateral head coaching move to somewhere else dumb enough to hire him. Again, long-shot scenario, but better for the long-term health of the program given our situation rather than players leaving, bombing next season, and he and his staff getting axed, imo.

right on the money. it's a major, major rebuild in 19-20.  Burrah is not the one to lead that rebuild.  SIU is backed in to a dim corner.  it is a no win.  get to the tournament and it's a contract renewal plus starting all over.  don't get to the tournament and we have wasted another yet and are starting all over.

Craving a McBride Special!

Every coach who will be recruiting for kids against SIU will be using that newsletter against the huckster.

I can't decide if that is a good thing or a bad thing for SIU; for the huckster it certainly works against him but does give him yet another excuse......

I doubt it will be brought up.  I’m not sure teams have to try real hard to out recruit SIU right now.

Maybe we should contact the Men's BB office Hinson was supposedly shocked the fans and boosters wanted him gone after a 20 win season and 2nd place finish in the Valley. He was seriously shocked there was a movement to get him FIRED. Still think he will get to finish out his contract.

No coach anywhere ever finishes their contract. It is an extension or fired. Only 2 options

That is usually true, but at Iowa, with Dr. Tom Davis, he had a year left on his contract and they told him that his contract would not be renewed but he could finish out his last year.  That announcement killed recruiting and set back the program a few years.

This is going to be a disaster, does anyone really believe that after 17 years of coaching without an NCAA bid Barry Hinson is going to lead us to his first ever bid ?  With this situation hanging over Barry's head how is he going to sign recruits this fall in what is a critical signing period  especially considering how unbalanced our current classes are.  This program may take years to recover.
