some people don't understand that logicMatchups make a big difference, Ebube can't guard smaller faster bigs. This guy tonight he could, he wasn't overmatched by him. But someone like Avila, he won't play much in that game, he would get blown by on every possession. He did the last time, had 4 fouls in 7 minutes, he can't guard quicker guys. So some games when its a good matchup he will do great like tonight, other games he won't play much at all. Thats how matchups work. So, Ebube is "unplayable" and Trent deserves 40 minutes because "we're a better defensive team when he's in there." 😶
And some of you guys wonder why we question Mullins' judgment??
That's because that "logic" is total BS.
Ebube shouldn't play against smaller Bigs?? He totally dominates them on the Offensive end. If he picks up some fouls on the Defensive end, so be it. Besides, Rupert was the one who fouled out tonight, not Ebube.
But if we ARE going to use the "match-up logic" then why is 6'2" Trent Brown guarding bigger, more athletic Guards for 40 minutes? He's not quick enough to prevent them from driving by him for lay-ups and he's not big enough to alter their shots. You can't have it both ways.
I agree Dia is better than Avila, but they are nowhere near the same type of player. Avila is basically a big guard, Dia is a down low banger. Two different animals. Dia is guarded better by Ebube, Avila is guarded better by Rupert. And I agree Ebube should get more minutes vs In State, and i think he would have in the last game against them if he could have stayed on the floor, but he cant guard the quicker players, and since SIU switches on every screen, he can't guard against ISUI'd guarantee Dia had the vast majority of those points in the 24 minutes Ebube wasnt in the game, he didn't do as much with Scotty in there. But you are correct in that Rupert couldn't guard him, which is why he fouled out only playing 13 minutes.Matchups make a big difference, Ebube can't guard smaller faster bigs. Seriously? Neither Ebube or Rupert could "guard" Dia. He had 25 pts and 7 rbs in 25 minutes. Dia is a way better scorer than Avila. Big and quick.
Dia is a better player than Avila IMO. Think he had 11 second half when Ebube got most of his minutes.
If Ebube sits on the bench when InSU comes here, we're going to get blown out again. He and Rupert both need to be guarding Avila most of the game. Mullins lost the game here last year by playing D'Amico at the 5 while Rupert sat on the bench for no reason.
what good is Scottie on the bench in foul trouble when he can't guard those smaller quicker bigs and if he gets beat on the drive there is no one to stop layup if TB gets beat we have help to stop the layupsome people don't understand that logicMatchups make a big difference, Ebube can't guard smaller faster bigs. If any of you watch the NBA, SE reminds me of a Boban of a few years ago on the Sixers. He was avg 8 points abd 5 rebounds in only 13 mins. He had a PER of mid 20s. So why not play him more mins? The benefits on offense are out weighed on the defensive end….if the matchup isn’t right with SE you can’t give him expanded run. I’ll admit that there shouldn’t be a game where he gets a goose egg, but in those games you just have to pick and choose where the playing time comes from.
As for Brown:
Here are our numbers with this guy playing 40 mins of over matched always getting beat Trent on the floor last night.
Belmont Avg. Last Night
Points: 79.8 63
Rebounds. 31.1 32
Off RB. 7 6.9
TO. 12.6 10
FG%. 48.6%. 37%
So I believe a thank you and maybe even a cold one is earned by the other four on the floor for bailing the player whom:
- Only stands in the corner on offense
-Gets beat every time on D
-Can’t Rebound
-Plays 40 mins
-Gets PT even though the other guys are taller than him.
Am I missing any other negatives?
The benefits of Ebube on offense are outweighed by his defense?
Avila is basically a big guard?
This is getting just plain silly. Now we have people praising Mullins' small lineup and under- utilization of the bigs.
Without Ebube's offense in the second half we don't win that game.
First time Belmont had the ball Dia was at the top of the key and he drove down the lane like a guard and laid it in. Did that more than once.
Avila is no guard!!
Hensley has struggled the past few games, last night in particular. Seems like defenses may have adjusted to him after his hot start, so we'll see what kind of adjustment he and the coaches can make back. Mullins really likes the concept of versatile bigs who can switch defensively so I think they really want him to be a key piece, but he's going to have to figure some stuff out at both ends of the floor.

Nobody is praising the small line ups. Dia shoots 30% from the perimeter. Avila shoots 44% SE is not quick enough to guard around the perimeter.....if you noticed Dia shooting last night he had all day to shoot and basically shot a set shot. Avila will kill us if that is the case. I guess you didn't see where I had no complaints with Ebube last night. Yes he was needed to win...100% you are correct. Do I think you can just roll him out there and not worry about the match ups....no. Avila is a big man who can knock down threes and score around the perimeter.....can SE do a good job of stopping that? Highly unlikely....if he comes out and shows he can do it, I'll eat crow and own up to it.
Not sure that post was a praising of the coach. SE should have played more in the Peay game…100%. Should we find some PT for him against ISU, yep. I just feel we will lose more than gain if he is having to guard bigs around the perimeter.

Have noticed that Hensley has trouble going both ways in the post. When he gets the ball down there it seems he has trouble going toward his opposite hand and gets stuck and shoots from a poor position when his initial look is taken away.
we can debate this about trent and scottie forever. two sides to both stories. i will tell you what is not debateable: al pacino loses best actor in godfather II to art carney. i am still not over that.
GO DAWGS!
If the Dawgs keep winning….play Al Pacino at the 5 for all I care. Haha
And I am pretty sure Art Carney could spell Trent at the 2 though I think his banged up leg from WWII would limit his minutes.we can debate this about trent and scottie forever. two sides to both stories. i will tell you what is not debateable: al pacino loses best actor in godfather II to art carney. i am still not over that.

Brendan wanted the and-one. 😆
That's quite a stretch giving Trent Brown all the credit for a team effort on defense. But whatever....we all have our opinions. 🤣
Can you all just enjoy the win and not expose all of your basketball illiteracy...
