I agree that Lance is essential to our chances of winning the MVC tourney crown. He looked ill to me during warmups at the Bradley game. He is an amazing competitor, and he is going to break out of this funk and hopefully he is feeling better soon, if he is ill.
If he were so ill, it's odd that didn't come up in any of the postgame interviews or on Mullins' MVC zoom call Monday when he was asked about Jones' poor play. And again, it's not like he hasn't struggled offensively in many previous games. Maybe he wasn't feeling 100 percent, but this strikes me as people looking for excuses.
I agree that Lance is an amazing competitor who has played with a lot of heart throughout his career and hope he finds his mojo for these final games of the season.
I was only stating what it looked like to me. No excuse, but he looked under the weather to me.
I thought he didn't look like he felt well when he came out the last time.
I don't hate Jones, and i'd love to see him firing on all cylinders. I don't actually expect him to sit out. However, this is one DAWG who needs to be on a short leash until they can figure out what's up. No 3PT attempts period. Come in and move the ball, play tough as nails defense (we know he can), drive the lane and score and pick up some contact to get the other team bigs in foul trouble, and make those FTs!! He can do so much more than try and fail to hit NBA 3s. I'm a die-hard Saluki fan fellas - i went to preschool at SIU and stayed through my Master's degree. I want to see us win, and yes i believe we can take Bradley if we get another crack at them.I couldn't watch as i was away from TV but i had CBS Sports up and saw we had possession with a few seconds left. Stomach churning, but i appreciate the reports you guys that were that provided. Salukis are not an awful team, but this was a tough matchup.
I said it before this game, and i know i'm not the coach, but Jones shouldn't have taken a single 3pt shot yesterday. His statline is 0-6 all from 3. We all see he's struggling, Mullins does too.
For what it's worth, i hope Lance is ok but i'd rather see him sit the entire next game. Johnson/Newton can be the starting guards and we can go bigger and i'd argue at this point we wouldn't be losing anything just because of the poor attitude. Keep Domask and 2 bigs in the whole next game. When Domask needs a breather, there are enough player to go around for a few minutes at a time. Give Banks plenty of minutes, Wonders can get in, Brown is fine, and let Cade & Ebube both play!
If Jones is back next year, which i am definitely not opposed to, hopefully a long break in game action is enough to help him sort out whatever is going on.
If Lance sits the entire UNI game, we'll get blown out.
I really don't think Jones was feeling tip top that last game. Just didn't seem himself at all ... On either side of the ball.
I think we are going to get the chance on Saturday in STL. I feel really good about a match up with Belmont or Missouri State, I am really hoping Saturday is against the Braves.I don't hate Jones, and i'd love to see him firing on all cylinders. Ken Pom is a way for us as fans to have some sort of objective measurement to balance out our own subjective biases. Of course we all want to believe that we’re better than Bradley. That’s part of being a fan. That doesn’t mean that’s true, though.
i believe nothing with kenpom. st marys at 8? yeah right. ok st in the 30s, doubt it. ohio state in the 60s? a joke. that said the net isnt much different. perhaps i just do not like any of the rankings at all

These last few weeks have shown that KenPom was right about this team. SIU hasn’t been a good team all year but we all ignored it because they were winning games, now things are starting to even out. They lost to a bad Southern Indiana team and struggled with bad teams like Alcorn State, SEMO, Chicago State, etc.
Good teams tend to blow out bad teams most of the time. You’re going to have the occasion game where a good team will struggle with bad teams but SIU did that all year. You just can’t have the 250th ranked offense in the country and expect to beat good teams in the Missouri Valley consistently no matter how good your defense is.
People aren’t going to want to hear it but this team has been no different than the Barry teams that won 20 games that people hated. I’d say they’re maybe one game better because Barry wouldn’t have beaten Oklahoma State.
That being said I’ll be in St. Louis cheering my ass off hoping this team wins 3 or 4 games.
This team is a much better defensive team than any of the Barry Hinson teams.i believe nothing with kenpom. st marys at 8? yeah right. ok st in the 30s, doubt it. ohio state in the 60s? a joke. that said the net isnt much different. perhaps i just do not like any of the rankings at all

This is the best defensive SIU team since Mullins was a player (64th this year, 25th in 2008, Barry’s best season was 140th twice in his last 2 years). But this would be Barry’s 2nd worst offensive team.
Defense wins games just the same as offense. Not as pretty, but you won't see pretty in a box score.

I'll make this analogy: to win a conference title, it's often said you have to be great at home and decent on the road.
As long as Mullins is here, it's safe to assume defense will be the calling card, but to win championships, he needs to get this team/program to the point where they're great on defense and decent offensively. To this point of his tenure, they've (mostly) been a bad offensive team.
i get where you are coming from and im not so much questioning the salukis rank. it just looks ridiculous where some other teams stand. as someone pointed out prior the valley stunk it up early and now it seems to hurt them. i just cant see the reasoning for throwing in 3 wcc teams and 20 big ten schools and the valley getting one. obviously im biased but still
We don't need to score a ton of points, the offensive efficiency has to improve. I think we really need to focus on bringing in shooters... The problem is most great shooters are not your typical defensive types. Have to find a way to balance it when building a team.I'll make this analogy: to win a conference title, it's often said you have to be great at home and decent on the road.
