@uncledawgpound rumor I heard “Smithpeters for 250,000 a year. He and AD are buddies”
I think Luke Murray would be a great hire. His resume is impressive and he knows how to recruit.
When the last two coaches were let go, I popped a few beers in celebration for the future was looking bright. The euphoria was short-lived though after the first of the two was released when they AD announced the hiring of a BBQ sauce salesman.
That huckster should never have been the head coach here more than 3 or 4 seasons, but he got seven seasons. And we had to endure seven years of an absolute clown-show the entire time.
Then Brian was hired and I while fully onboard with this hiring and sincerely thinking we would get back to March Madness under Brian. Maybe not in 4 or 5 years, but we would at least be on an obvious and direct path to it by now.
Alas, not to be, and my other deep conflicting gut feeling at time was it would come this. Though at the time I was thinking Brian would be given at least the same length of leash that the huckster had been given. But it's different times now and totally different administration (but a much improved and seemingly competent one at that) and unfortunately, we're going to be starting all over again.

When Mullins was hired, I thought it was too good to be true (the first time I felt that way about any SIU basketball head coaching hire). He was a Saluki through and through. A former player who exemplified class on and off the court. The top assistant with a program that reached the Final Four. The type of guy who every mom and dad would want their daughter to marry.
I guess this just proves the adage that when something seems too good to be true, it's probably the case.
But I don't think we've heard the last of him. Maybe it's not really a good comparison, but I would not be shocked if he pulls a Bill Belichick, who failed as a first-time head coach, went back to being an assistant for a few years, learned from his mistakes and achieved greatness. Now, I'm not predicting that Mullins will achieve anything near the scale of what Belichick did, but he very well could re-emerge as a successful head coach who has a very good career -- the potential is there.
Pretty sure Murray has been mentioned for about every mid major opening on the east coast and turned them all down. Looks to be going to Jerome Tang route

Yeah I threw Murray in the other thread's list with nothing behind it other than I'd love to see Bill Murray at games in Carbondale. He's an East Coast guy and there's not really any Midwest connections I can find.
So happy “we” all got what “we” wanted.I'll be rooting for Bryan wherever he ends up. He might end up being a good head coach some day but I don't think SIU could afford waiting right now.
I really hope there's a coaching search for his replacement and they aren't stuck on one guy. I think that would be a mistake.

Agree with all of this; that was exactly how I felt about hiring him.
Maybe a more apt comparison than Belichick would be Porter Moser . . .

I am sad and disappointed the Brian Mullins era has come to an end. Brian, his staff, and the players on all his teams represented SIU in all the best ways. For this I am particularly grateful and proud.
I wish Brian and his family all the very best going forward. I know he will be successful wherever he lands next. I thank him for his service and dedication to our shared beloved alma mate.
Like wise to his staff (and families) - Thanks! And very best wishes moving on.
And to all the players - Thank You! Your great young men and will also do well going forward. Best wishes! And I sincerely hope all/some of you stick around to help SIU start its next great chapter of MBB history. And that you too develop a lifelong love of SIU.

Lane is a snake in the grass. I’m not the biggest donor in the world, but I don’t mind disclosing big enough to have a plaque in Banterra lobby for helping fund Saluki Way. Screw them. BTW I was informed that Lane’s wife hasn’t even moved to Cdale. F him.

Whatever they do, please no current assistant coach / former SIU player.
