For some, post season is obviously the exclusive criterion for the program. Accusing those for whom it is not of settling for mediocrity is a bit unfair. I'm sure no saluki fan is content with mediocrity, but there's more to the sport than post season. Just one example: One of Herrin's clubs won 26,got no "invitation". I guess I'm  content with mediocrity, because I thought that was a helluva successful season and I would gladly have settled for it for many more years.

I am also having trouble figuring out what was meant by the “folks were done paying for the job and he wouldn’t be back.” Are you talking alumni, donors, or school administrators? The next couple of weeks will be interesting to watch.

I can't see Bryan getting fired at this point.  He hasn't done a great job, but it hasn't been terrible either.  Didn't Hinson get 7 years for his mediocrity?

Mullins isn't getting fired unless we completely tank from here on out.

I'm inclined to agree with this unless there's some sort of smoking gun we don't know about. Assuming he stays, the focus must shift to retaining the returning core players and hitting the recruiting trail (especially in search of guard help) immediately once the season ends.

If anyone really felt that way, I would agree with you 100%.  What I don't agree with, is comparing what we've seen the past 5 years to a really good team that won 26 games and, by almost all accounts, was robbed of an NCAA bid.  Oh, and by the way that team made the NIT (one of 7 consecutive post season appearances during Rich Herrin's career).  I'm hoping this staff turns this program around and gets to the post season in years 6, 7, etc but for the first 5 years it's been business as usual (and not good business).

@saluki-4-life dribble and or pass around perimeter until shot clock dwindles down then force something up.
Usually 4 guys standing while X has to improvise or force something.
So many games where our big men were not utilized.
Now you tell me what amazes you about our offense, please be specific.

@rockin-dawg I think you're onto something rockin. I'm not ready to give up on Mullins but this guy appears to be some young kid or a troll.

Yup. I get the impression he's both young and has some sort of ties to either a player, member of the coaching staff or someone in the athletic dept -- too close to the situation to judge it objectively.

Just stating that we're living in a perpetual world where its MVCt championship or bust is telling. You could've said the same about the Valley in the 90's, yet by some force of mystery, SIU burst onto the national stage just a few years later. Could've said it again after Creighton and Wichita left; enter Loyola. A 'watered down' MVC didn't hold them back.

As a passionate, life-long Saluki fan, I expect excellence, especially since SIU has been there before. I'm sure Bryan Mullins shares the same expectations. Expecting less is a firm step towards failure.

I am plenty old enough to have been around and experienced the glory days, plenty old to have suffered through the end of Lowery and have no ties to anyone associated with the team… I simply believe in Mullins and think if you’re going to hire a brand new coach who consistently finishes in the top half of the Valley you should see it out a little longer than 5 years when one of those years was a COVID year and in the middle the landscape of college athletics completely changed. If Mullins leaves he will be successful elsewhere, I would stake a lot on it.

I have no idea, most likely donors that think they know what is going to happen, i literally said it is basically gossip and people from SI love to talk.  This board is a great example of that.  It could be certain donors or certain ppl in the athletic dept for all I know, my source is about to retire from the university and has worked in about 6 different departments and knows a lot of people, occasionally I do find something out important for instance I knew about Fletcher getting suspended for the weed before the end of the day.  For the record I like Bryan and enjoyed many a late night Don Taco with the dude and he is nice, probably better to keep him and just complain about some things rather than start over but that decisions is not up to me obviously

My thing is, if we are firing him after this year what are we even doing?  If Bryan finishes top 4 he might get coach of the year...

I do believe when it is popular opinion everyone wants him to stay, he will leave.  Usually how it goes.  I'd prefer he stays but I will continue to complain about the lack of teaching and using different defenses and he needs to understand what a post player is.  Would have won the valley and the tournament if he played cade last year.  Not like we had two starters for basically top ten teams or anything.  There are haters and there are complainers.  Also worshippers and kool aid drinkers.  I am in the complainer category

I agree. At no point have I personally wanted him replaced. He's done well in some areas and has showed some promise leading the program. Plus, he loves SIU and is all-in invested. I'm just impatiently waiting for him to lead us back to that next level where SIU is a realistic annual threat to make a post season and do some damage.

My only real gripes are my perceived stubbornness in some of his whiteboard work and rotational choices; things that not only I'm seeing, but are also often discussed here by many who are watching every minute of game action, and sometimes even by those who are calling the games with notable experience like Rodney Watson.

I do think Bryan can get us there, but after 5 years without, and staring down the barrel of two decades with no post-season berths overall, I'm tired of waiting. Its time.

When speaking of BM, there are some factors to be considered.

1. He has had 3 AD's in 5 years.

2. He has had a couple of chancellor's as well as university presidents over his five years.

3. Covid in year 2

4. NIL/Portal in year 3

I believe that all of us want stability for our university, including athletics. BM and Nick Hill ( yes, adding NH )represent our two major sports. Two quality individuals. They also bleed maroon, and I believe truly want to be at SIU. They provide stability for two programs that receive the most publicity for this university.  IMO: Their players, coaches, as well as themselves represent our university in the upmost fashion.

It is certainly tempting to bring in a proven coach, or assistant p5 coach. If any success, they are most likely gone after after 3-4 years, and it is time to start over, again.

Parts of this season have been extremely frustrating, but there have also been some good times. Let's see how the next few weeks transpire, then we can discuss further. In the mean time...

GO DAWGS!!!

@tj-mcflys  I agree with what you posted along with Mullins being the youngest head coach in D-1 basketball when he took the job.  All the changes and I am in the minority here but I say give him a 5 year extension explain what he needs to do and watch.
