Absolutely.  I am really pleased where we are at TODAY, but there are still a couple critical games left here to end the season.  Regardless, the reality is that this team is not going to the NCAA or NIT this season (unless they shock us all and run the table in St Louis).  I said in a prior post that THIS offseason will be critical. not only for the players we do, or don't, bring in but who choses to stay or leave the team.  This team has a chance to take a major step up and be a real contender for a Valley title or it could go into next season as a projected bottom tier team. 

That being said, I really feel like we're going to see the fruits of Howard's recruiting.  If we can retain the core of the team and further develop them, I think we're finally going to be where we were all hoping to be.   

 

This sums up my feelings fairly accurately. Really need a good offseason without wholesale player defections and "just a guy" portal recruits. If the offseason doesn't go well, we're probably back to having the same conversations about Mullins being on the hot seat starting in June.

 

In June of last year we didn't know how good Kennard, AJ, Ebube and X would be this year.  Spare me the "We will check the recruiting rankings and make judgment before next years team ever takes the court" argument... If anything this years team should give you a huge confidence boost that they know what they are doing.

For all we know there is another stud on this roster that is waiting for their chance to prove it next season.  The foundation of next year is already pretty good.

 

Our one and only hope for that unexpected "stud" already on the roster is Hensley.  Our other three portal signings have been an absolute fail.  Stulich and McGee can't even sniff the court and Trey Miller is so bad Mullins had to yank him out during garbage time last night.  Sterling Sharp hasn't shown us anything and Hornecker is perpetually injured.

So, no "confidence boost" here until I see some better recruiting.

This year only produced Hensley, however the year before produced Ferguson and Johnson. Ferguson has also been playing hurt, so his ceiling is pretty high for next year. Johnson and Ferguson are pretty high impact transfers and they don't get much higher impact than Johnson. We need at least two more high impact transfers next year, at least one at PG and at least one at SG.

Over the last 4 games we are 3-1.  During that span X is a 13-50 shooting. Other players have stepped up and shown they can score. Damico has five straight double digit games.  

If…..we get a transfer PG we’ll be fine next year.  I feel AJ and Kennard will be the two that will be the “surprise” players.

Depending on transfer portal players….has a SIU team ever had this length?  If we replace X and Trent with height think of how tall our roster might be.

Exactly.  Stop telling me Mullins can't work the portal.  Benson, Suggs, X, AJ, Coupet... There have been plenty of portal successes and not all were what we thought in year 1.  I can see AJ and Kennard being a hell of a duo next year.

Looking at his overall body of work in the portal, I'd objectively evaluate it as hit or miss. Three of the four guys he brought in this season cannot play, plain and simple. But it's also true that he found a gem in Ferguson two years ago and did well with several other portal transfers in previous seasons. With help from Jerrance Howard, let's hope he has some "hits" this time around. Also agree that Ferguson and Davis could be very dynamic next year -- although I do worry a bit (maybe unnecessarily so) about a Power 5 school trying to poach Davis, who has so much potential.

Assuming Bryan receives an extension, the sooner they publicly announce it, the better. At a minimum it should be announced the week after the tournament for recruiting purposes but announcing it pre-Arch Madness would be even better.

The uncertainty does nobody any favors unless they're planning to make a change, which I doubt is the case.

Exactly, if the plan is extension each passing day is a waste.  That is why I am starting to think our admin might just be bad at their jobs.  Women's hire seems to be a disaster.

Kennard, AJ, Rupert, Troy, & Scottie are already players.  My comment was directed at Saluki-4-Life and his assertion there might be some hidden gem on our roster.  I don’t think there is one unless it’s Hensley.  Portal recruiting was bad last year.  It’s imperative we get at least two stud combo guards this April.

Kind of hard to believe that the HC is gonna be here another 3 years after this one, if that’s the case with a an extension.  

I think it’s ridiculous how accepting of mediocrity the athletic dept and some of the fan base have become.  

I hope Jerrance Howard is a miracle worker and sticks around a few more seasons, but I doubt it. 

And even if Jerrance is that, the HC wouldn’t know when to play the studs he might get us.  

The longer this latest underwhelming hire goes on, the bigger a hole it puts the program in.  

I will repeat this, I cannot believe how bad/below average the HC is at this job.  He runs a clean program and the guys play hard for him.  But that’s about it.  

Zero postseason in FIVE YEARS is no reason for an extension.  It’s not getting better either.  

Supporter of the Fab 4: Scottie Ebube, Foster Wonders, AJ Ferguson & Cade Hornecker.

They’re the ones that can get us where we haven’t been in 15 years.

For some reason, my gut's telling me that Mullins could take money out of his own pocket to fund the team's entry into the CBI this year in a heartbeat, if only to take the heat off of another season of missing the NCAA and NIT tourneys.

So... if Mullins did do this, does he buy time with those of us who are pretty much tired of the same results yet again?  If he shells out $27,500 of his own to bankroll the Salukis into the CBI, do we call off the "fire Mullins" dogs here?

It's an interesting proposition... and honestly, if he did do this, it would mean something - that he's willing to pony up some dough to prove that he's willing to go above and beyond if it means playing anything resembling postseason hoops in March.

I'd give him a pass if he did this... but he probably won't, saying the CBI's beneath him.  But something's gotta change here, because this'll be 17 straight years with no NCAA tourney, and 16 straight years of missing the NIT as well.
