@barkeep-1967 hopefully it’s a good choice. Because I don’t think the admin survive if they fail.
it’s not I don’t think anyway
I highly doubt it’s him. He has nothing they talked about in the press release. He seems super unimpressive
@barkeep-1967 I may have missed it. I think the only name I’ve seen so-called insiders supposedly convinced that SIU was after is Smithpeters. You referring to Spradlin?
there was Devin Johnson, associate HC at Texas A&M. That would be a Lane call.
If it does go this direction, I don’t see it sitting well with a lot of people. It means the coach was already pre-determined with no “search”. Also everything that came out of Leonard’s mouth about what he is looking for in the next coach was just a bunch of gibberish. Won’t be a good look for the administration especially with half of the fanbase already not happy over the firing.
so you are saying that a person in a mostly political position would not be telling the truth ?
noooooooooooo 🤣

He’s not my first choice compared to Spradlin and Calhoun but SIU getting an SEC associate coach would be far from an unimpressive hire.
Maybe he'd bring Jace Carter with him too who struggled in SEC but was very good in the valley
I've heard that there is up to $1m in NIL funds committed by donors if we get the right coach.
Would like to have seen what Mullins could have pulled from the portal if he had that kind of budget.

I see. I wouldn’t be as excited by that hire as by some of the current head coaches that have been discussed, but I’d put him above Smithpeters.
Has coached alongside some good coaches and is mentioned he’s a strong recruiter. Probably only a matter of time before he gets a head gig somewhere. I’d probably prefer Southern not be his first stop, though.

Pleasantly surprised to hear that.

They desperately need money for NIL, but what does "the right coach" even mean? Is it different for some donors than others? Not asking you to directly answer the questions, just seems odd that they would put that kind of contingency on it. That's how you attract the right coach and I can tell you that's probably one of the first questions a lot of coaches are asking about.

That resume is not unimpressive at all. Associate Head Coach at Texas A&M at that age (upper 30s?) indicates the exact opposite, actually.
Texas a&m had recruiting violations in 2021 by the head coach and an assistant coach. Was he there then and was he the assistant coach mentioned?I highly doubt it’s him. He has nothing they talked about in the press release. He seems super unimpressive

Someone mentioned Long Beach state coach being a candidate. On the siu athletics facebook page
If I had to rank the main options that have been talked about, I’d go:
1. Jerrod Calhoun, Youngstown State HC. His downside is he hasn’t hit an NCAA Tournament in 7 years as head coach but his D2 resume is impressive (national runner-up at Fairmont State) and he’s turned a doormat Youngstown State program into a Horizon contender with limited resources. He’s shown he can navigate the portal too.
2) Preston Spradlin, Morehead State HC. This should really be a 1B to Calhoun. Spradlin has hit 2 NCAA Tournaments in the last 4 years and has an NIT mixed in there. Two concerns is the adjustment from the OVC to the MVC and he runs a slower tempo like Mullins.
3) Devin Johnson, Texas A&M Associate HC. Part of the Buzz Williams staff and has followed him around. Known as a strong recruiter and for his team defensive strategies.
4) Kyle Smithpeters, Mizzou AC. Built John A Logan into a JUCO power, strong recruiter at Missouri. The downside is Mizzou went 0-19 in the SEC this year.

so rumoured 1 million if the right coach comes along. Which means why wasn’t this brought up with Mullins as coach. That would have gotten us some very nice talent.
Kinda strange that Mullins is gone and all of sudden we can come up with a million dollars in NIL MONEY 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
